FIRST ONE IN
Game evolves
step by step
A.
By ED COLLINS
In tennis, everyone's in a
hurry to get great. The courts
are filled with nervous play-
ers, all trying to imitate the
styles of Borg, Newcombe,
Connors and King.
Great strokes don't Just
happen - they evolve. When
you see John Newcombe hit
one of his incredible topspin
forehand passing shots you
must realize its taken him
years of practice to develop
that particular shot. Don't try
to imitate him. That's like
trying to imitate a trapeze
artist. It looks easy until you
try it.
If you think you'll eventual.
ly be able to control your
screaming forehand drives -
good luck! Nobody makes it

to the top that way. You must
understand and respect the
progression in learning to.,
play this game - step by
step; otherwise, you'll never
put the entire thing together.
Tennis is learned and en-
joyed best when the student
appreciates the various
levels and stages of develop-
ment.
The first is called the "Hit
arid Giggle" stage. This is
where the beginner -begin-
ners hit some and miss some.
They spend most of their time
practicing against the back-
board and playing "mini ten-
nis" - simple rally games
from a shortened hitting
area, near the net. Their ob-
jective is to have fun and
learn about the bounce and
spin of the ball.
A few months later the sec-
ond stage begins - the "3-
sti*oke game." This is where
the player seeks instruction
to improve his forehand,
backhand and sere. He
practices "shortcourt" from
Inside the service lines and
spends an equal amount of
time working on all three
strokes. He learns to rally
from the baseline. His
blisters turn to calluses.
The third stage is called
"Mountain tennis." As the
student gets semiserious
about competition-, one
strategy governs his budding
game: hit the baU over the
net - high. His arching
groundstrokes take the shape
of little mountains,

After a lot of sweat and a
year or two later, the player
cliscovers he can direct his
groundstrokes. He is in. the
"hit 'em where they ain't"
'liege. He learns to attack the
backhand and hit cross -court.
The rallies become longer as
the player develcips his pa-
tience and control of the ball.
He's a player.
The fifth stage is the long-
est and most important. It
lasts as long as it takes the
player to be able to average
• three hits each point. That
means in 100 points, the play-
er can make 300 hits. It's not
easy. A "3 -hit" player has
usually played at least three
full years and is very respect-
able. He learns to use ball ro-
tation to control the pace and
shape of the bell.
Stage No. 6 is when the
player begins to take advan-
tage of the short ball and ap-
proaches the net. He's very
selective, making sure he
only comes in on the right
ball. He spends time working
on his net game. His spin
serve begins to take shape.
The seventh stage is when
the player starts to be clever
with the ball. He varies the
pace and spin of the ball. His
groundstrokes develop pace
nd depth. His shots have
more topspin and angle. He
learns to use the entire court.
He wins the club tournament
and builds a trophy case in
his den.
Many years later the eighth
stage is spent developing a
more powerful and effective
serve. The ranking tourna-
ment player follows his serve
into the net, makes very few
unforced errors, and devel-
ops a couple of tennis weap-
ons. His game has a personal-
ity and people stop to watch
him play. He's a star!
