Sondra was such a living proof of nothingness that there was talk. at her birth, of denying her the right to live. Today, she is a practising psychologist who could teach all of us a few things about living and being human. Her interview with Roy Bonisteel was probably the most stirring and meaningful experience seen on television. A brilliant woman, she could read his mind. Indeed, she was not what you saw! That the girl has managed to fight and stay on top of life as she has, is miracle enough. That she retains a keen sense of gratitude and a marvellous sense of humor, is something else again. She told of the many times she meets up with ignorant people who stare at her and treat her like something unreal or like a living vegetable One day, a woman sarcastically asked her, "Why are you in that wheelchair?", to which the brilliant Miss Diamond replied with sonde difficulty, "Wha wheelchair?" How much ,this girl has to give to people who think they have i all but have nothing! How much she has to teach people who think they know it all, but know nothing about what a human soul must often suffer! .Reading Mr. Boni - steel's tO rshe said, "I bet you thought I was ugly when you first saw me." To which came words to this effect: "But now that I know you, I think you're beauti- ful!" Beauty - in a real human sense! What a wonderful story about a beautiful human being! The CBC got the award - she deserves a dozen! 0-0=0 Honor has come to another tele- vision series. The Irish Rovers, who have had their own series on CBC Television for a few seasons, have sold their series to the NBC affiliate in Minneapolis -St. Paul, Minnesota. Produced in Van- couver, their series has been seen in some smaller American centres. But this is the first time they have hit the bigtime and it could be a sign of things to come. They won the Canadian ACTRRA award last year as the top variety and entertainment act in Canad- ian television. 0-0-0 Noticed that Tim Conway has signed to be a regular cast member of The Carol Burnett Show. His guest appearances have become so frequent that he may as well be a regular. He is a good friend of Carol and a very funny guy, the only comedian who can break up co-star Harvey Korman, himself a very funny performer. 11 Carol coul(only come up with some new wilters now, she'd have a great show, since she's got lots of talent there. Unfortunately, her skits and playlets are no longer funny, many of them either ridiculous or off-color. She still manages to pull in the awards, perhaps because competition is weak or everyone wants to remain loyal to good old Carol. Anyway, we'll watch and see. Conway definitely will add something to the series. in today shy first sift, SUPPLIES ,HEALTH SuPPLIES . GORDON GREEN Seems to me that the more we speed up our way of life, the more ,ftirious -our determinatien to oyertake the future, the more longingly We keep looking back at the past. In this age When Science is our God and the compnter our compass we get positively poetic about what we have left behind. Old Dobbin and the shay, the village smithy, the old mill stream, the old oaken bucket, the little red schoelhouse such venerable institutions as' these have inspired volumes of rhap- sodies. Some of our naughtier poets, have even broken into verse about the old time backhouse. How come then that we shed so few artistic tears about the passing of the woodpile? We seem to haye forgotten that yesterday's woodpile did some- thing more than bake mother's bread and keep winter on the fir side of the kitchen.door. It was a status symbol. One glance at it and you could tell what kind of family owned that woodpile. In the best of families the wood Would be neatly cut, split and piled in a woodshed in July or August, and it was proof of fore- sight and good management as well as industry. God would smile warmly on that home. If you weren't well enough established to boast a woodshed, God would still be gracions to you if you were the kind of family whose woodpile was not only big enough and dry enough, but was piled so neatly it was as solid as the butt of a house. At the bottom of the social scale were the feck- less folk who merely bucksawed their minimum daily require- ments from a pile of limbs and poles,- and seemed to have no thought whatsoever for the stormy months ahead. A starved and sloppy woodpile generalW meant that the man who owned it was not only lazy, buf sinful as well. What faith could you have in a guy's Christianity when he, spent so much time playing pool or pinochle or politics that his wife had to splither own wood? I suppose the reason the Lord has laid it upon my heart to deliver this little sermon today is because it looks as though the wood -burning stove may be due for a dramatic resurrection. Looks as though that resurrection isn't going to wait for the Second Coming either. With fuel oil at the price it is one Of our national magazines ran a feature article last spring on how to restore your old kitchen stove and return it to active service. Well if -the woodpile once again comes to your backyard, don't say I didn't warn you that your neighbors will be Watching it closely to see what kind of man you are.
