LY THE "MONSTER" Billy Liar, the situation comedy series seen on CBC -TV Saturday nights at 8:30, has an imaginative "hero" named Billy Fisher (played by Jeffe Rawle) whose fantasies complicate life for himself and everyone else. In one of his • typical daydreams, Billy as "The Monster" creeps up on his unsuspecting Dad (George A. Cooper), his Severest critic and constant prodder. FIRST ONE IN Your backhand needs. practice r .0 By ED COLLINS If you figured out why your backhand is such a burden, maybe you could teach your- self how to improve it. Of the many things that contribute to nervous back- hands, the No. 1 reason is simply a lack of repetitious practice. For example, how many forehands do you hit for each backhand? Four? ... Five? .r Ten? And how much better is your forehand over your backhand? Four times? Five times? Ten times? It's no wonder you can't bit backhand. You don't practice enough. Maybe you're like the average weekend hacker, running around . your back- hand every chance you get. "Better to win. with the fore- hand than lose with the back- hand," you say. With this attitude you can look forward to always being a weekend hacker. If you never give your backhand a chance to grow you can't ex- pect it to mature. For the mo- ment this means you must play a backhand with a back- hand. Even though you'll lose a few, eventually you'll be much tougher. Guaranteed. First, you need to go out and hit backhands until your hand bleeds. For one week do nothing but practice back- hands. ackhands. Take a lesson, or read a book, to make sure you are practicing properly. Hit against a backboard until it asks you to quit. At night practice without a ball in front of a mirror. Think about the backhand. Create a mental picture of Ken Rosewall's or Billie Jean King's backhand and work to emulate it. Secondly, make sure you always (and forever) start -a ..rally-viiith a backhand. ,You'll-- discover that you are -condi - honed to starting the rally with a forehand. You must break this reflex and get that backhand cookin'. Thirdly, promise yourself that until you become a su- perstar you'll always play a backhand with a backhand. With these three goals set for yourself, you can't help but improve. To assist your backhand development heed the following advice: 1- Make sure you change grips - a backhand with a forehand grip doesn't have a chance. 2 - Prepare early. Pull the racquet back before the ball bounces, turning your shoul- dersso your opponent can see your back. 3 - Lean forward and hit ball in front. Don't let that lit- tle fuzzy thing push you around. Press forward with the front shoulder and hit the ball a foot in front of your frettfoot. 4 - Keep the shoulders per- pendicular, sliding through the ball. Don't attempt to slug the backhand. Learn to con- trol it. Good luck! 4 Crossrc.ads a - 11 cNcN HAMILTON • 1 K IINi MX WINGHAM • 6 GLOBAL• TORONTO. 10 CFPL LONDON ...
