For those interested in pick-
lingEthis week's column features
recipes for dill pickles and
pickled corn cobs. 1 have also
come up with a salad- that is a
little different from the ordinary,
and a muffin recipe that you will
find very 'convenient since the
batter can be stored in the refri-
gerator and used as needed.
DILL PICKLES
Select small, fresh cucumbers
(3 to 4 inches in length). Wash
thoroughly and put in brine over-
night. Rinse well the next morn-
ing. Pack in sterilized jars, plac-
ing a bunch of dill in the top and
bottom. For each pint of cucum-
bers, use 2 tablespoons of sugar.
This can be added to the cucum-
hers in the jars. Make a syrup
(cold) using the ratio of two cups
of vinegar to one cup of water.
Fill jars to overflowing. Seal jars
but not tightly. Place in canner of
warm water, and boil until
bubbles start to rise up inside the
jars, and the pickles have
changed color slightly. Remove
from canner, and seal tightly.
PICKLED CORN COBS
Select corn cobs when they first
begin to form (field corn is the
best). Husk and add boiling water
for $ to 10 minutes. Remove from
water and pack on end in small
pickle or pint jars. Add one
teaspoon salt, and a pinch of
tumeric. Cover with the following
hot Syrup and seal. Syrup: 1 cup
vinegar to 1 cup of sugar. Bring to
a boil and cover *corn cobs.
, BEET SALAD '
5 or 6 medium-size beets
1 medium-size onion (diced)
2 tablespoons vinegar
1 tablespoon cooking oil
Dash of salt and pepper
Sprinkling of sugar
Cook beets and remove skins.
Let cool and dice. Add onions and
seasonings. Add the vinegar first,
then the cooking oil: Sprinkle
with sugar and stir well. For best
flavor, make this salad an hour or
so ahead of eating tune.
BUSY DAY MUFFINS
3/4 cup shortening
. 2 cups sugar
3 eggs (beaten)
* cups buttermilk
cups bran
4 cups pastry flour
21/2 tablespoons baking powder
1 cup raisins
Dash of salt
"Combine aboveingredients and
mix well. Dissolve 1 tablespoon of
halting soda in 1/4 cup boiling
water dAid add to above mixture.
Let stand covered for 24 hours in
refrigerator. Bake as needed, at
400 degrees for 20 minutes.
ON MAKING PICKLES:
Hollow Pickles: This problem
may arise when cucumbers have
been picked too long before using.

Soft Pickles: There are three
possibilities here. The brine was
too weak, the vinegar was too
weak, or you overcooked the
pickles.
Tough Pickles: The brine 'was
too strong.
Dark Pickles: The use of
iodized salt can darken pickles.
Also, iron utensils will discolor
pickles. Alumintun or enamel
kettles and wooden spoons are
recommended. Very hard water
will also darken pickles.
DO YOU HAVE:
Do you have a recipe for beet
relish, preferably one with horse-
radish in it? If you have, I would
appreciate hearing from you.

Q. Should II have my intra-
uterine device removed be-
cause of the danger of infec-
tion?
A. Since the report of some
serious infections with the
Dalkon Shield, every IUD
wearer is naturally worried
a. 1 asking questions about all
TUDs.
Up until now, as a result of
reports on thousands of users,
there has been little serious
infection that could be
ascribed to the IUD. Care was
taker not to insert them in
women who had histories of
pelvic infections. There are
always new pelvic infections
Just as women without IUDs
develop new infections. If
there is sexual intercourse
with an infected partner,
there will be an infection, IUD
or no. The fact that there is a
string in the vagina does not
seem to make any difference.
If your IUD is not a Dalkon
Shield and is not causing you
any problems, you might as
well leave it alone. If it is a
Dallton Shield, you may be
wise to have it removed be-
cause of the higher incidence
of pregnancy and because,
with pregnancy, infection is a
possibility and a serious com-
plication.

Standup collage no paste

Some words always seem
to be considered in pairs:.
"bread and butter" "soap
and water" "rain or shine."
This also applies to art
projects since one speaks of
"pen and ink drawings" or
"paint and brush work."
Even "pencil and eraser" go
together for some artistic ef-
fects.
The phrase "cut and paste"
has almost become.one word.
GARAGE CONVERSION — Built-in banquettes line one
wall and a portion of the corner of this room which could be
borrowed for a garage conversion. Bar with high bar -chairs
and the folding table give the room instant party qualities,
yet are functional for many uses.

Fun rooms can be ,exciting

our three children who are
constantly eating, entertain-
ing friends, playing the guitar

cal room witheasy-care

Would you please give us

creating a room that will be
right for the children but
which we adults will enjoy us-
ing, too? —V.B.

practicality and functional
design. You might find that
built-in seating along one or
two walls of the room wotifd
work well. You might do sim-
ple striped canvas or sail-
cloth banquettes..
Maybe you and the children
would like a serving bar and
some bar chairs color co-
ordinated with the striped
fabric on the banquettes. Or a
large serving cart on wheels
might be just as practical.
Some plastic cubes for snack
tables probably woild be
practical and attractive.
Also, why not invest in a
pair of good-looking folding
tables with perhaps natural
butcher block plastic lami-
nated tops that would be at-
tractive enough for your din-
ner parties and practical for
the children's activities.
Some bean bag chairs made
out of vinyl or the striped
canvas might please the
younger set, too.
For the floor I would imag-
ine an off-white vinyl would
be a good choice if you are
planning lots of color in this
room Casual laminated win-
dow shades, Roman shades in
the stripe fabric or woven
blinds would be attractive at
the windows.
Q. We have just inherited
illy parents' most elegant
Chinese rug m blues and
golds. We need to recover our
Chippendale sofa and two
chairs, so we thought this
would be a good time to start
all over again. I have to buy a
new coffee table, and I don't
know what kind to choose, so
I will not detract from the
beautiful symmetry of the
rug. What colors would you
choose for the sofa and
chairs? Besides blues and
golds,,I have some treasured
pieces in rose and green.
Should I use solids on the
furniture or prints? If a print,
what kind? — T. Y. P.
A. My first advice to you is
to seek the professional ad-
vice of an interior designer
who can help you select ex-
actly what you want. You will
avoid making costly mistakes
and be more assured of hav-
ing the room you picture in
your mind.
Many stores today are of-
fering interior design serv-
ices or you may hire a design-
er simply on a fee basis for
his or her advice. You can,
too, go to an independent de-
signer and have that person
select the fabrics fof your
furniture and draperies and
order them through the de -
Signer. Do consider one of the
three because your rug can
be greatly enhanced by the
proper setting.
My guess would be that
solid fabrics in variations of
the blues and golds of your
rug on your furniture would
detract less from the pattern
of the rug which you want to
spotlight. Don't use a coffee
table on your rug if you think
it would spoil the look. In-
stead buy a nest of tables to
use sofa -side and place
around for guests when
needed.
DEADLY PLANT
As few as one or two seeds
of the castor bean plant, used
as a houseplant or an orna-
mental plant outdoors, have
been known to cause death.
fAr
When one begins making
something out of cut material
it is often an automatic next
step to reach for glue, paste,
transparent tape, rubber ce-
ment, or even a stapler if
sticking substances are
neither handy nor practical.
But here is an\ exception to
prove the rule, a project
which eliminates an adhesive
ingredient. The only required
materials — aside from
creativity — are paper and
scissors.
Heavy paper, such as card-
board or tagboard, form the
bass for this standup collage.
Construction paper in a color
variety provides both con-
trast and enough body so fig-
ures, can stand alone for a
three-dimensional appear-
ance. Practice \ with news-
paper scraps to find a pleas-
ing abstract design. Just re-
member to allow enough
paper on the bottom for fold -
SWOLLEN CANS
CAC warns consumers not to
buy food in swollen cans or cans
that are leaking or bent. One
tablespoon of food contaminated
with botulism toxin can be fatal.
Many deaths have resulted from
people tasting food they suspect
may be bad. Canned meat or
vegetables should not be served
or even tasted unless they have
been heated for 10 minutes at 212
degrees F or 100 degrees C. Be a
concerned consumer.
mg it under, out of sight.
Decide the position for each
design and cut a matching
slit in the baseboard. Be sure
it is identical in length so. the
design will go through tightly.
If too loose, flopping will re-
sult. The amount that tucks
under will depend on how
high and wide each piece will
be. Usually, half an inch is
sufficient. •
