in slow motion
By ED COLLINS
The next time you're on the
court take the "Instant
play Slo-Mo Test." Your
game needs it.
Tennis is a complex as-
semblage of motor skills that
require the cooperation of
your entire body. It's possible
you are not gettin a coop-
eration you need to be irgood
Player.
No matter how experienced
you are, it is imperative that
you develop a kinesthetic
awareness of yourself. This
means you should know ea-
t actly what all parts of your
body are doing when you are
Playing.
The best way to discover
this kinesthetic sense is sim-
ple: slow down! This gives
you time to actually "feel"
the movements. Play a set of
"slo-mo" tennis: serve, rally,
volley and smash the ball in
slow motion.
Chances are you will fail at
first. You may even come all
unglued and completely miss
the ball. If this happens, you
must swallow hard and ac-
cept the following fact: you
are faking it!
There exists a pe-fect cor-
relation between yolar ability
to play "slomo" tennis and
"full speed" tennis. The truly
adept player can always slow
down and maintain his co-
ordination and skills.
If you failed, it is suggested
you quit faking it and go back
to the basics. You can better
practice these fundamentals

within \ a shortened hitting
area. 'fry playing "short
court" a rally game inside
the service court. This 11
automatically teach you
key principles all great play-
ers build their games on.
They are:
1. Keep your balance. As
you make ball contact, don't
jump, twist, hop or wiggle.
Play each ball with your foot
flat, knee bent — on balance.
2. Abbreviate your back -
swing. Most strokes are best
when the backswing is con-
servative. Don't wind up like
a baseball pitcher. "KISS"
(Keep It Simple, Stupid).
3. Prepare early. Billie
Jean King has stated that
racquet preparation is more
important than the execution
of the shot , itself. "ERP!"
(early racquet preparation) .
4. Move your fat feet. If you
can't get to the ball, your 1500
forehand won't be worth .a
dime. Move back away from
the bounce of the ball, shuffle -
step, keeping it in the correct
hitting zone.
If you passed, congratula-
tions! This indicates that you
are in total control. Some-
times it is difficult to intellec-
tualize while you are playing.
Tennis at the top levels must
be an automatic reflex that
"just happens." However,
once in awhile you must
check to see that it is "just
happening" correctly.
One practice session per
week will guarantee an im-
proved game. Practice —
don't compete. Slow down
and rally from the service
lines. Take a complete back -
swing and followthrough. See
the ball better. Watek
seams of the ball as it-10ns.
Keep your eyes momentarily
on the point of contact. Move
back to the baseline and
maintain the same deliberate
flow of energy. Don't be vio-
lent. Feel your muscles. Feel
the ball. Lift'it over the net --
don't hit it. Move in slow mo-
tion.
One last reminder to the big
"Sunday sluggers": all pro-
fessional players warm up in
slow motion. Now you know
why.
BETTER ENGU$H
By D. C. Williams
WORDS OFTEN MISUSED
Do not say, "Numerous of his
poems have appeared in the news-
paP9r " Say, "MANY of his poenis."
Avoid such expressions as, "all
thg farther" and "all the higher,"
in the sense of "as far as" and
"as high as."
Distinguish between the adjec-
tives, "EXHAUSTING" (tiring; de-
bilitating) and "EXHAUSTIVE"
(thorough; comprehensive). Thus:
"This is an EXHAUSTING exercise
we have been practicing," and,
"They published an EXHAUSTIVE
study of the region's history."
Avoid the expression, "He is a
friend of mine." It is much better
to say, "He is MY friend," or, "He
is ONE OF MY FRIENDS."
OFTEN MISPRONOUNCED
Papier-mache. Pronounce pay -
per -ma -shay, principal accent on last
syllable.
Finance and financial. Pro-
nounce first syllable of both words
as "fin" (preferred to "fine"), ac-
cent second syllable.
Tgrpsichore (the art of dancing).
Pronounce turp-sick-a-ree, accent

Preventive -Pronounce in THREE
syllables as pre-ven-tive, and not
as "pre ven-ta-tiv."•
Vibrato (pulsating effect in mu-
sic). Pronounce vi-brah-toe, accent
second syllable.
OFTEN MISSPELLED
Climatic (pertaining to climate).
Climactic (pertaining to a climax).
Connoisseur; observe the "nn" and
"ss." Recur and recurring; preferred
to "reoccur" and "reoccurring."
Hostile (unfriendly). Hostel (lodg-
ing). Knickknack; observe the four
"k's." Withhold; two "h's." Withal;
only one "h" and one "1." Thres-
hold; one "h."
WORD STUDY
"Use a word three times and it
is yours.""Let us increase our vo-
cabulary by mastering one word
each day. Words for this lesson:
ULTRAISM; extremism; an ex-
tremist point of view or act. (Pro-
nouflce ull-traTiz'm). "Because of
this fanatical man's ultraism, we
find it very difficult t6 believe in
him."
