New moped laws
go into effect
New legislation defining
mopeds and their operation goes
into effect immediately, Minister
of Transportation and Com-
munications John R. Rhodes an-
nounced.
The new legislation now makes
it illegal for anyone under 16
years of age to operate a moped
on Ontario roadways.
It also. makes it illegal for any-
one to carry a passenger on a
moped.
Under Section I of the Highway
Traffic Act, a motor assisted
bicycle or moped must not weigh
more than 120 pounds, it may not
have a piston displacement of
more than 50 cubic centimetres
and it may not have a hand or foot
operated clutch or gearbox
driven by the motor and trans-_
ferring power to the wheel. A
moped must have pedals which
are operable to propel it at all
times and it may not be able to
travel faster than 30 miles per
hour on level ground within a
distance of one mile from a
standing start.
Municipalities have also been
given the authority to ban
mopeds on raodways under their
jurisdiction where the speed limit
is 50 miles per hour or more.
Additional legislation requiring
licences, for both the moped and
the driver and the wearing of
'helmets will become effective at
a later date.

MEN'S INVITATIONAL -- A
big vote of thanks to Frank Ma-
dill for the excellent job he did
with the Invitational, Oyer 140
golfers enjoyed a perfect day on
the 16th. Frank had everything
well organized. Just a super day.
Many thanks to those who assist-
ed at the scoring tables and vari-
ous other places around the club.
Without your services the club
couldn't have run the tourna-
ment. Special thanks to Shirley
Kaufman and the ladies whopre-
pared such an excellent meal.
And speaking of tournaments, I
understand the ladies are plan-
ning to hold their own invitational
during the latter part of August.
I'll have more on that later.

COUPLES' TOURNAMENT:
We now have a new tournament
going on a regular basis every
Thursday evening. Bill and Holly
Keil have organized a couples fun
tournament, and if it continues to
roll in the same manner as the
first night it should be a roaring
success. Registration fee is a
buck a head, which covers the
cost of a bar-b-que following the
tournament. If you're interested
in playing, just show up between
6 and 7 any Thursday evening. In-
cidentally, it's a two -ball tourna-
ment.

SOCIAL: Doug Layton and
Paul Rintoul have come up with a
novel idea for the next social, on
August 9th. They're running a
"Where Were You in The Fif-
ties?" dance, featuring music
from that era. Tarrif for the
dance is $8 per couple and in-
cludes a beef bar-b-que. Tickets
are available at the clubhouse or
contact Doug and,,Paul. Should be
a good night. Hope you can make
it.
