the fine writer of mystery,
Opening night for "The Mouse-
trap" was held "last Friday even-
ing at the Blyth Summer
Festival. Directed by Steven
Thorne, it starred Angela Guy
and Jim Schaefer as the .'young
couple, Mollie and Giles Ralston,
whohave just become owners of

countryside. They have four
people registered as guests,
people they know nothing about
but who seem to be respectable
enough and want lodging. So they
open " Monkswell Manor to the
strangers - and another unex-
pected guest who arrives out of
the blue to spend the night. •
From that moment on,,a tale of
murder and intrigue untangle
and the audience is kept guessing
about these people until the play
ends, surprisingly -but, for the
young couple, happily.
The house guests -were por-
trayed by Ron Swartz, Media
McElroy, Don Nicholson, Patri-
cia Hulley and Douglas Palmer.
-Gordon Bradley played the de-
tective who subsequently arrived
at the manor " to investigate a -
series of incidents.
Performing adequately in their
'roles, the cast members tended to
let the last act drag. Perhaps,
like with a good book, we were
just too anxious to get to the last
chapter! The young couple per-
formed admirably in demanding
roles and in their quiet ways, Ms.
McElroy and Mr. Nicholson lent
calm English dignity to the
scenes in which they played. Ron

Friendly .giant
comes of age
Television's Friendly Giant has
turned 21 years of age.
The children's morning week-
day series has been continuously
on CBC -TV since 1958 and for the
four years prior to that the series
originated from the University of
Wisconsin in Madison, to the U.S.
National Educational Television
network.
Bob Homme has been the
Friendly Giant for those 21 years,
and looks forward to another 21
years.
"It's been a pleasing, gratify-
ing and exciting time," he says.
"As they say, I've combined my
vocation with my avocation. I do
what I like to do."
And he adds that 21 is a good
age for a "giant".
But to the pre-schoolers who
watch him, Friendly Giant is age-
less.
Bob Homme originated Friend-
ly back in the days when he was
on staff at the university radio
station in Madison, Wisconsin.
When his series made the
transfer to TV, carried by NET in
the U.S., CBC -TV children's de-
partment saw the program and
convinced him to come to Cana-
da.
The format has changed little
since that time. He has an inti-
mate rapport with his young
audience, captivating them in the
telling of stories. There's also the
loving relationship with the pup-
pets, Jerome the giraffe and
Rusty the rooster. The voices of
Jerome and Rusty are supplied
by Rod Coneybeare.
Homme always writes his own
material, and he has never tired
of his role, though he has avoided
publicity for himself, preferring
to maintain the illusion of the
"friendly giant".
The series is seen Mondays
through Fridays at 9:45 a.m. on
CBC -TV.
