When steers reach about the
900 pound range, a producer can
safely shave back feeding costs
by cutting back on the protein
supplements, according to a
recent Ontario Agricultural
College study.
Animal scientists G. K.
MacLeod and D. N. Mowat found
that after feeders reach the 900
pound mark, they gain just as
well without supplemental pro-
tein. `..
In a r r went feeding trial at the
Elora Beef Cattle Research
Centre, 144 Hereford and Here
ford -Angus crossbred steers were
fed a corn silage ration that in-
cluded shelled corn from about
700 pounds live weight. The cattle
all received equal mineral and
vitamin supplement, but only
half received protein supplement
in the form of soybean meal.
"Steers receiving the extra
protein outgained .the others by
0.3 pounds per day for the first 56
days, but once they reached the
900 to 925 pound range, they did
not benefit from the protein
supplement," says Dr. MacLeod.
The main consideration before
withdrawing protein supplement
is the protein level in the corn
ration. The ration must contain at
least nine per cent crude protein
on a dry matter basis. But Dr.
MacLeod cautions that the vari-
ability of the protein level in corn
silage and shelled corn must be
considered before the supple-
ment is eliminated.
"Producers definitely need to
have their silage and grain corn
analyzed through a feed testing
laboratory to ensure that it con-
tains adequate protein levels," he
says. "And it should be stressed
that when and if protein supple-
ments are withdrawn, the
mineral and vitamins normally
provided by such supplements
must be continued."
While the researchers state
that the experiment's results can
be generalized to cover steers
from most British beef breeds
and their crossbreeds, the in-
formation gathered cannot be
applied to dairy beef or to bulls
and heifers. Further eperiments
will be conducted at the Elora
Beef Cattle Research Centre to
determine the requirements of
supplemental protein for finish-
ing these animals and any cutoff
point that could be beneficial to
producers.
The story of The Canadian
Arthritis and Rheumatism So-
ciety is about people, those who
have needs and th8se who try to
meet these needs.
