TEE Goderich Signal is honest
for once in its existence, and equally
coned: in its prophesy. While the
Conservative papers claim the
Ontario elo,ctions will take plac,
this fall, and the opposition Jour-
nals state tbsy will not occur until
next September, thc Signal is of
opinion that the elections will be
on before the winter's snow litts.

THE Mitchell Recorder w!ixes
exceedingly wroth because the
Stratford Herald has exposed some
of Mons. Laurier's poluiral incon—
sistencies. The Recorder eludes
popular and fair discussion and
resorts to petty abuses against the
Herald. Such childish pleas as "die
Times has a few admirers, etc ,"
are characteristics of theRecordor's
arguments. It was ever thus with
the Recorder, it cannot follow
honest discussion.
THE election in West Lambt
on Monday to fill the vacancy
the Ontario Legislature, caused
the death of Hon. Mr Pardie, an
for which there were three aspi
ants, resulted in a victory for th
Liberal candidate, Mr. Charl
McKenzie, by a majority of 66
Mr. McKenzie polled 2.223 votes
Mr. Fleck, Conservative. 1,69
and Mr. McCrae, the Third Part
mau, 594 votes. The electio
resulted as was expected by th
Conservatives, who made n
special effort to contest the const
tuericy, allowing it to go by defaul
The nehr approach Of the genera
ereafti and as parties are nol,
balanced in the House, it mattere
'little to the Conservative part
whether the battle of Monday wa
won or lost. The result will settl
the Third Party, their canclidat
being left away behind.
IN his speech at the Catholi
Congress at Baltimore, Mr. Mercie
spoke of the spoliation of th
Jesuits in Canada by George th
Third. George the Third was no
the wisest or best of kings, but h
did not despoil the Jesuits. Th
Society, as Mr. Mercier wellknow
was suppressed by the Pope in th
interest of public peace, and th
British Crown simply took possess
ion of its derelict estates under a
law which exists to the present day
—the process of escheat. Th
reference to George the Third was
-of course, meant to please Mr
Mercier's particular audience ; bu
he ought not to have kept back an
essential part of the truth in order
to catch the applause even of a
Church Council. It would have
been more to the point perhaps
had he called the attention of the
American people to the fact that
they too have a Jesuit claim case.
In 1762, eleven years before the
suppression of this Society by
Clement the Fourteenth, the Par-
liarient of Paris adopted a decree
disbanding the Jesuits. Louisiana
was at that time.a French colony.
It was ceded to S vain by the
Treaty of Paris, February lo, 1763,
but the transfer did not take place
until 1864. On July 9, 1763, the
Conseil Superieur of Louisiana
followed the example of the Pa.rlia-
ment of Paris, Che estates of the
Jesuits were confiscated and their
mission churches pulled down
throughout the whole extent of 'W
Louisiana. hy did not Mr.
Mercier remind his hearers of this
bit of history and urge them to
demand restitution from the State
of Louisiana or from the United
States Congress, since either one
or the other or both are unquestion-
ably the beneficiaries.of that act of
"spoliation," committed, be it
noted, before the Pope had sup.
pressed the Jesiiits ?
