Mr. Benj. Higgins, who recently com-
menced farming on the farm which he
purchased of Mr. John Dew, in the 4th
concession of T_Tsborne, has sustained
serious loss and discouragement, in the
death of a valuable thoroughbred Clycleso
dale mare. The animal about avveek
ago was seized with paralysis, and on
Tuesday morning died. A few months
• ago Mr. Higgins paid $400 forthe team,
• which was considered one of the best in
th o neighborhood,

Exeter boys turned out on Thanesgiving
Day and enjoyed a game of football, the
playing of which would be a credit to the

last week, to the effect that Measly,. Wm.
Pickard and N. Hooper bad .assigned,
has proved to be foundationless.' It is too
bad that such rumors should be set afloat
to sueli an extent as was the ease in these

Notwithstanding the low prices for bar
ley, that cereal is being marketed in un-

shipment of 7,000 bushels of barley.

A frame barn, together with the whole
season's crop, the property of Mr. Josiah
Lane, Sth concession, Blanshard, was de-
stroyed on Friday night by fire. Alr. Lane
was cleaning grain by lamp light, when
some pigeons 'upset the lantern, causing
the confiagation, Loss partly covered by
insurance in the Blanshae d Mutual.
A quiet and harmless hound belonging
to Mr. Geo. Bawden was on Saturday last
severely stabbed by some heartless wretch,
a pitchfork being the instrument. The
brute will probably die Mr. Bewden has
strong suspicion as to the guilty party. and
of his -guilt can be established proper pun
ishment will he meted out.

At the time of the agitation, which ori,

few more manufacturing institutions will
place Exeter in the position which she
is so deserving of, in consequence of her
superior agricultural surroundings.

A meeting of the creditors of Mr,
James, Pickard of , Neter, was held yes-
terday in London, After some little dis-
cussion, caused by an unsucoessfril attempt
of the Toronto creditors to control the
meethig, Messrs. W. R. Hobbs, J. Mee -
shall, and G. C. Gibbons of London; 'Robt,
Greene of Hamilton, and W, 3.1VIcIVIaster
of Toronto, were appointed iespectors,

stock, which will therefore be sold en bloc
on the 261h inst. in Exeter. The estate is

and energetic young man, who will one
day make his mark in the canine he has

Ottawa, was in town on Monday. —A
great many of those interested in James
Pickard's insolvency were in London
yesterday attending the general meeting
of the creditors. ---Messrs. Hunter &
Crossley received $1,350 for their six
weeks' Work. in Kingston.—Mr.
John Atkinson has secured a situation
with Messrs. Proudfoot cai Box, cabinet
makers, Seaforth.—Mr. John Page of

Thanksgiving services were held in the
Presbyterian and TriVitt Metnorial
churches on Thursday last; the Services
in the former church being a union of the
Presbyterian au d two Methodist churches.
Excellent sermons were preached in both
instances. •
The Goderich town officials have awak-
ened to the fact that effort is necessary in
connection with rail way matters, and .on
Thursday a delegation from Goderieh will
open the campaign at .Dungannen. At
two o'clock a full representation froni the
various municipalities throughout which
;the proposed lite between Goderich and
Wingham will pass is called for.

On bat Saturday Col. Coleman, of Sea -
forth, was stricken with paralysis on the
train coming from Toronto. On arrivin
at Stratford, Mr. Tiffin had hirn remove
to his office and sent for a physician, who
had him removed to the American house.
He was taken home on the evening train.
The colonel has many friends here who
will be sorry to hear of his affliction. The
word received from Seaforth since is to the
effect that he is no better, and doubt is
felt7ae to his recovery.
The re -opening of the Main-st Methodist
church will take place on Sunday and
Monday, NOV. 24th and 25th. On Sunday
sermons will be preached by the Rev W.
McDonagh of London, and Rev. J. S
Henderson (Presbyterian) of Hensel].
Monday evg. there will be a 131atform
meeting, at which addreeses will be deliv-
