Baked goods are a mast in
almost every home. But not - too
many of us enjoy baking asmuch
during the heat of the summer. 11
you have a freezer, the wise thing
to do is have a real baking spree
and stock it up for the summer.
Loaves or breads are one of the
more versatile of baked goods as
they can be used along with the
fresh fruits of summer, as a
snack with tea or coffee, or as a
finishing touch to a filling meal.
LEMON LOAF
2/2 cup shortening
1 cup white, sugar
2 eggs (beraten)
12 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
12 teaspoon salt
Y2 cup sweet milk
grated rink of one lemon
Cream shortening. Beat in
sugar, and add eggs. Sift dry
ingredients, and add to shorten-
ing mixture alternately with the
milk. Stir in the grated lemon
rind, and mix well. Turn into a
greased loaf pan, and bake at 350
degrees for 50 minutes. Combine
the juice of the lemon and 1/4 cup
sugar, and pour this over the loaf
immediately upon removing
from oven. Remove loaf from pan
while still warm (but not hot) .

HOUSEHOLD HINTS:
Do you have an empty spray
dispenser bottle around the
house? If so, fill it with water and
spray your house plants. It
freshens the leaves and cleans off
the dust.
If you have pets that insist on
jumping up on the furniture, here
is a solution. Place a few mouse-
traps on the chair, sofa, What-
ever. Set the traps and cover
them with newspaper. The snap
of the trap;will,' quickly convince
pair .pet; that, the furniture is not
for him to sit on.
RECIPES WANTED:
What can we bake with
cherries? We look forward to re-
ceiving recipes within the next
few weeks which make use of
cherries. Hopefully these could
be published just prior to the
cherry season. Send your recipes
to the Wingham Advance -Times,
Box 390, Wingham, Ontario NOG
