HOLDING COURT
Simplicity is the key
By ED COLLINS
"K. I. S. S." ... In the Army
it means "Keep It Simple,
Stupid ! "
"KISS" applies to your ten-
nis game too! The most con-
servative technique is the
most effective.
Without realizing it, Rod
Laver has probably done
more damage to the average
club player's game than good.
People learn through imita-
tion. Laver's wrist action is
one of the marvels of the
game - but certainly not
something that us mortals can
emulate.
Control is the prerequisite
to power. To develop this as-
pect of your game you must
have a kinesthetic feel for the
skill. It's easier to develop
this feel if you keep the tech-
nique simple.
The serve is a good example
where most players violate
this principle. Although
everyone aspires to serve like
John Newcombe, it becomes
an Impossibility if you imitate
him. The motion is too com-
plicated. It's like learning to
drive in a Mazeratti. You'll
kill yourself.
Simplicity is the key. Don't
start with your weight on your
front foot and rock back and
forth. You'll end up with your
weight back as you toss the
ball, lunging forward as you
try to hit it. A simpler way is
to start with the weight bal-
anced on your back foot with
your left heel off the ground.
Rhythmically rock forward as
you toss the ball. It's easier
and more effective.
Do you lose your balance on
the serve? -leo you hit a dis-
proportionate number of first
serves into the bottom of the
net? Chances are that you're
again trying to imitate the
"big boys." Instead of tossing
the ball three feet into the
court and leaping at it like a
spastic frog, keep your bal-
ance. Toss the hall over your
head and hit from a balanced
position. It's so simple that
way.
The forehand is the average
hacker's biggest source of
winners. Unfortunately, it is
an even bigger source of er-
rors. Several reasons make
the forehand a potential
weapon that is dangerous.
One is the relative ease with
which the player can crunch
the ball. Anybody can hit the
forehand hard; most
"dummies" do. It's always
entertaining to watch the
typical "weekend Warrior"
wind up on his forehand as (if
he were Dizzy Dean, reaching
back for the "blue dart." ...
Boom! Once every three
games he hits a passing shot
that leaves everyone with
their mouths open. "Rocket
Rod," they call him.
Don't irritate this immature
style of play. Be conservative
with your racquet prepara-
tion. On the -forehand your
racquet should never extend
behind your back. Keep your
elbows.comfortably close and
be a nice neat little package.
Eliminate the use of the wrist,
prepare early and keepyour
balance. Remembers ...
Keep it simple, smarty,
