QUESTIONS WOMEN ASK
Pills make estrogen
regulation easier
By ELEANOR .
RODGERSON, M. D.
Q. I have heard about put-
ting pellets of estrogen under
the skin to take away the ef-
ffecas of the menopause. Is this
a good method of treatment?
A. Estrogen, for those who
need it and have no contrain-
dications for it, may be ven
in several ways: by injection,
by creams, by suppositories,
by pills, by implanting the
pellets you mention under the
skin. Implanting a pellet re-
quires a small surgical oper-
ation under sterile technique.
It then secretes • a 'steady
amount of estrogen for about
three months (according to
the manufacturer).
Most of -us have found that
pills by mouth are more prac-
tical and simpler than any
other method. The patient
herself can help regulate her
dose, and, even if she doesn't,
the regulation is easier for her
doctor. One disadvantage off
the pellet is that if the dose is
not just right for the patient,
she is stuckwith it for the
three months. The big advan-
tage lies in the fact that she
won't have to see the doctor
often.
Vegetable oils
used in nylon
Synthetic fiber industries
which have mainly used pe-
troleum as a base for their
products have been forced to
look for -other raw materials
as a result of rising oil prices.
Some manufacturers are
utilizing such vegetable oils
as soybean, sunflower seed
and safflower oil to produce
nylon.

PLEASING—Plastic posies, while not "egg-xactly" real
looking, can create pleasing pictures.
CHILD'S PLAY
Egg cartons used
in flower
By BUROKER &
HUNTSINGER
What do ecology and eggs
have in common? As you
probably know, there's great
concern these days about the
difficulties of disposing of
many plastic objects and con-
tainers.
These objects are useful in
our daily life, but they do not
dissolve or disintegrate
readily, and so often create
sewage disposal problems.
It may seem a very small
part to play, but whenever
you begin an art or craft proj-
ect, see if any of these plastic
household materials can be
recycled. By transforming
them, at least a little of socie-
ty's throwaway problem can
be remedied.
Many supermarkets pack-
age eggs in colorful Styro-
foam cartons. Besides being
sturdy, their attractive pastel
shades are light and delicaCte
looking. The colors cannot be •
duplicated from a' paint box
or by crayons.
Ordinary cardboard egg
cartons can also be used to
make a stand -out floral pic-
ture, but Styrofoam Ones
bring a polished, "profession-
al" look to these 3-D cre-
ations.
Begin by cutting the bottom
of the carton's individual
compartments. Cut into the
center of each of these seg-
ments so four separate
petals, joined only at the bot-
tom, result. Then, round the
edges so their smoothness
will provide a realistic look to
each petal. The Styrofoam
cuts easily, and neither
breaks nor proves brittle if
handled carefully.
The bottoms of each section
•
pictures
are already flat and smooth.
They just need a dab of white
glue to keep them firmly in
place on a sheet of construc-
tion paper or cardboard used
for background or frame. The
accompanying illustration
suggests how to arrange the
flowers and, of course, more
or fewer egg holders can be
used.
Before attaching these
"blooms," however, cut
stems and leaves from col-
ored paper. . Arrange, then
paste these as desired. Dime -
size, round flower centers,
the same color as the stems,
can be pasted into the cen-
ters.
A picture of simplicity, this
project nevertheless has an
attractive appeal which, in its
own fashion, rivals a real
bouquet.

LET'S TALK
Inner self can
be a stranger
By W. LEE
TRUMAN, PH.D.
A friend and parishioner
was in counselling. Frank
confided, "For a very. long
time, I did not like myself ."
He was saying this not in self-
pity, but simply as an unfor-
tunate fact of life. "To feel
like that was very difficult,"
he related, "and very pain-
ful."
Frank had done enough
thinking about what this
meant, and he continued, "I
did not like myself for a num-

ber of reasons, some of them
valid and some of them pure
fancy. I would certainly hate
to go. back to that way of liv-
ing.
"I woke up gradually," he
continued, "when I discov-
ered with real surprise and
pleasure that a number of
people did like me. It took me
a while to understand that if
they can like me, why can't I
like myself? Just thinking
about it did not do any good,
but slowly, somehow, I
learned to like myself and
then it was all right."
Frank was not sharing this
self-love • in any negative
sense, but he was laying out
for me a dimension of his own
self-knowledge. He had
learned to accept and like the
person he Was, and therefore
he began to accept himself as
other people accepted him.
This was a great pleasure for
Frank, and he could relate to
me how miserable it was for
people who do not like them-
selves at all, for any number
of reasons.
The majority of people who
seem = - a ' actor ana coun-
sellor, he , hey get past the
symp ' hich had brought
them to my office, begin to
deal with their basic prob-
lems. Often it is that they dis-
trust themselves, they know
they put on masks, they cover
themselves with hypocrisies
and emotional dishonesties,
until they are plastic, unreal
people, and reject what they
have made of themselves.
The symptoms often are that
they quarrel, boast, pretend,
and are jealous. The cause is
that they do not like the per-
son they have to live with in
their skins.
The other side of this pain-
ful truth is that often a person
does not know himself well
enough to know whether he
likes himself or not. Since we
have an almost automatic
aloofness in our culture, if not
distrust of strangers, or even
a fear of strangers, this can
carry over where a person
fears and dislikes his
"stranger" inner -self.
Frank's breakout was that
when he was able to come to
like himself, he was released
from his own real prison he
had built for himself of self-
contempt, self -rejection, and
se -dislike.
If I could choose a gift to
give, this is the one I would

3/4 cup pineapple juice
1 cup crushed pineapple
(drained)
4 medium size carrots

NOTE: If you oil or moisten your
mold form before putting in the

will slip out easily.
HOUSEHOLD HINTS:
You will get twice as much
juice from a lemon if you heat the
lemon first.
Green tomatoes will ripen
more quickly if they are placed in
a paper bag and stored in a dark
place.

begin with. When a person
begins to like himself, even a
little, the sharp edges of his
cruelties and the damaging
explosion of his angers can
begin to be dulled. Such per-
sons do not need to hurt
someone, just to keep their
ego chins above water. Ac-
cepting the person We are
