HOLDING COURT
Hit up for a
forceful serve
By ED COLLINS
Watching the average club
level player on the court is
puzzling. It's difficult to
understand why he repeti-
tiously damps his first serve
into the bottom of the net and
resorts to pushing his second
one to get the point started.
The common misconception
here is that the player thinks
he can hit the serve down into
the court - a la Pancho Gon-
zales' flat "cannonball"
serve. Forget it! Unless you
are 6 ft. 7 in and have a reach
of ten feet, you will not have
She necessary height to serve
directly down into the court.
You must hit up and for-
ward to develop a consistent
and forceful serve = not
down. Here's how you can im-
prove your serving effective-
ness immediately:
Check your service toss. Al-
though John Newcombe
tosses the ball four feet into
the court and makes contact
with his feet nine inches off
the ground, you must realize
that you're not John New-
combe. Serve on balance. Try
tossing the ball so that it falls
back on your forehead. You
can only hit up from here.
Practice a "sit-down"
serve. Take a basket of balls
and practice your serve from
a sitting position (on your
t the serv-
p on the
the motion
t resting on
'Foss the
right knee) . Start
ice line. Choke-
racquet and sta
with your racgt
your right shoulde
ball over your head and flop
your wrist over it so the han-
dle ends up outside your fore-
arm. Serve the next basket
from a point half way between
the service line and baseline
- and the next basket from
the baseline.
Now stand up and try the
whole motion. Let ball rota-
tion (topspin) and gravity
work for you. If you've done
everything properly you've
lost 50 per cent of your power
but gained 500 per cent more
control. Keep practicing until
you can direct it and someday
you'll own a serve that will be
an asset instead of a liability.
