CHILD'S PLAY
Cufa bottle
for napkins
By BUROIiKER
and HUNTSINGER
A pretty napkin holder can
be made from an ' ordinary
plastic liquid detergent or
soap bottle. When completed,
itis hard to guess the origin of
this decorative and practical
table ornament.
Use a container that is nine
inches tall, and cut off the top
sothe bottle now measures six
and one half inches from the
bottom.
On both the front and back,
draw an oval or curved shape.
It is best to trace around a pa-
per pattern so both sides will
be exactly the same. The
highest part of the . curve
should measure four and a
quarter inches from the bot-
Neit, cut down the sides so
there are two strips, each
about an inch wide. Cut to
about one inch from the bot-
` tan so the entire length will
be about five inches.
Use very sharp scissors or
knife to make an inch wide
slip into which the side strips
can be folded back and tucked
into. These will form handles
on either side.
First, however, punch holes
along all the edges with a pa-
per, leather, or similar punch
tool. Be sure to make these
just as even as possible. Then,
use bright braid, soft leather,
or yarn to lace a design
through each hole. Decorate
the top and edges, then lace
along the sides of the handle
strips. An overhand or whip
stitch is the easiest and looks
good, though you can experi-
ment and try for other, more
intricate stitches if desired.
Sip the handles into place
and then the holder is finished
except for additional decorat-
ing. As the accompanying il-
lustration suggests, an artifi-
cial flower .and a bit of 144.
can add 8dainty extra touch.
Decals or magazine cutouts
can also be attractive.
You may also find other
uses for this container besides
holding paper napkins. What-
ever function it fills, chances
are it will be for something
that keeps this once out -of -
sight bottle right in plain
view.
QUESTIONS WOMEN -ASK
Does marijuana
affect pregnancy'?
By ELEANOR B.
RODGERSON, M.D.
Q. My husband and.I
smoked marijuana for awhile
before we were married. Now
we want a child. Will it be nor-
mal? Is there any danger of a
congenital anomaly?
A: I have not seen any re-
ports linking marijuana with
congenital anomalies. If there
were going to be effects, they
would be more likely with
marijuana smoking during
pregnancy and there have
been no reports of these, ei-
ther.
There are still 9 lot of un-
knowns when it comes to con -
„genital defects and we all
have heard of families who
deliver abnormal children
"but of the blue," so to speak,
no , histories of problems.
All the factors tha influ-
ence unborn babies- 'e heft
researched carefull a..ay
and we are learning slowly.
*Now there are lists of agents a
pregnant woman should avoid
if possible and her doctor will
tell her of others when they
appear. Of course, some
drugstnust be given to certain
pregnant women to treat
other conditions, like diabetes
and epilepsy. There is the old
balancing act between the
good of one and the evil of the
other.
The undeveloped ova in the
ovaries do not seem to be
touched by drugs before preg-
nancy and, in the male, new
sperrrl,{cells are manufactured
constantly. It is after fertili-
zation_ that we worrr.about
what drugs will do to the de-
veloping parts of the baby in
the uterus.
At this state and throughout
pregnancy, ordinary tobacco
smoking is harmful, let alone
aspirin, alcohol, ampheta-
mines, antacids, bar-
biturates, and tetracycline.
Cigarette smoking produces
low -birth -weight babies which
have more difficulties with
life than normal-sized babies.
Tetracycline will color de-
ci uous teeth. Certain hor-
. mhnes may slightly masculin-
ize a female baby and diethyl-
stilbestrol (DES) may cause
abnormalities of the genital
tract and vaginal cancer.
It seems sensible to avoid
anything that is not pre-
scribed for a good reason and
to begin a few months before
you try fora pregnancy.
Q. I took birth -control pills
before I got pregnant. Now I
plan to nurse my baby. I don't
want to get pregnant again
right away, so is it all right to
go back on the pills? Will they
hurt the baby?
A. The main disadvantage
of going back on the oral con-
traceptives is that they may
decrease your milk supply
just when the baby needs it
most and just when the strug-
gle may be upsetting for _you.
They would probably not hurt
the baby — 'there is no evi-
dence that points to harm —
but.I think you will do better if
you use some other form of
contraception while you are
nursing.
I would recommend the dia-
phragm and jelly, but you
could talk to your doctor
about the advisability of an
intrauterine dev!fce. Using a
means that is not harmful will
give your milk supply a better
chance of being adequate.
However, some women are
-good milk producers even
while taking the pills. There is
no way to be sure l efore trial.

CA votary .cookies make a nice change and have a few
less calories than sugary Qnes. But not many less, s
don't get carried away when nibbling on these special

while the shortbread has a soft-. , inbIy texture.

Holland Edam or Gouda
'A cup all-purpose flour
1 pup whole wheat flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
Cream shredded cheese and
butter; blend in flour and salt.
Work with hands until the
mixture forms a smooth ball.
If it is too sticky add a little
more flour; if. too dry add a
few drops of water. Lightly
butter one 9 -inch square cake
pan or one 9 -inch round layer
cake pan. Press the dough
firmly and evenly into the bot-
tom of the pan. Cut the short-
bread into squares or wedges.
Prick with a fork. Bake in
400° oven 20-25 minutes until

Savoury cookies are both made with imported Holland Cheese,

the other is softer and shortbread -crumbly.
