Channel 8 Entertainment June 9 at 7:30 will mark the of- ficial opening of the Stratford Festival 1975 season when one of Canada's most talented young actresses, Pat Galloway, will present her portray of Joan of Are in "Saint Joan". It will be presented on the stage of the Festival Theatre. Directed by William Hutt, the George Ber- nard Shaw play will also star Tom Kneebone as the Dauphin, Mervyn Blake, William Needles and a newcomer making his debut with the Company, Stephen Macht. The following evening, the Festival Theatre will open its doors again, this time to the first Shakespearean play of the season, "Twelfth Night". Direct- ed by David Jones, this lyrical, high-spirited and joyful. celebra- tion of the wonder of living, will feature Kathleen Widdoes, Brian Bedford and Tom Kneebone in the lead roles. Miss Widdoes, who has played many fine roles in fihns and on the stage, is making her debut with the Stratford Company. Among her memor- able movies are "The Seagull" in which she starred with James Mason and Vanessa Redgrave, and "The Group", the Mary McCarthy novel -inspired movie about a group of girls who live together in a boarding house. She will play the role of Viola. Bedford is also making his first appearance at Stratford. A top stage actor, he has appeared at Stratford -on -Avon, Stratford, Connecticut, London's West End and Broadway where he won a Tony award for his role in "School For Wives". He will play Malvolio in the Shakespearean play. Tom Kneebone, long recog- nized as a fine comic, will play Feste. He worked hard „last summer at Niagara -on -the -Lake where he wrote, produced and starred in a Gilbert and Sullivan revue. Laterhe went on tour with Dinah Christie in a Noel Coward - Cole Porter concert but while in Newfoundlan, he and Miss Christie were injured in a car accident and, 'their tour was interrupted. Lead roles in Shakespeare's second production staged this season, "Measure for Measure", opening on June 11, will be taken by William Hutt, Martha Henry, Richard Monette, Mr. Bedford, Miss Widdoes and Mr. Macht. Directed by Robin Phillips, Strat- ford's new artistic director, this 'dark comedy' explores the, themes of justice and power. Hutt will play the role of Vincentio, Duke of Venice, which he also played in 1969. Miss Henry will be Isabella, bringing to that role her own sensitive portrayal. A very talented pair, these two, of which Canada should be very proud. Joining the Festival repertoire on July 29, will be Bertolt Brecht's "Trumpets and Drums", a light-hearted musical directed by Mr. Phillips and telling the story of a young lady .who masquerades as a soldier just to keep an eye on her very special guy. Sounds like fun, and the performances will be tops, from people like Jackie Bur- roughs (Remember her in "Vicky" for which she won an award?), Hutt, Bedford and Kneebone. War was never like this! Leaving the banks.of the Avon for a moment and travelling downtown to the Avon Theatre, opening on June 10 (student per- formances and previews are always before the actual open- ings) will be Shakespeare's "Comedy of Errors", the story of two sets of twins who become involved in a series otevents that leave all of them wondering who they really are. Starring roles go to Nicholas Pennell, Gale Gar- nett, Jackie Burroughs. Miss Burroughs and Mia Anderson star in the other Avon production to open in June, Shakespeare's "Two Gentlemen of Verona". Both plays will be directed by Robin Phillips and David loguri. Arthur Miller's masterpiece, "The Crucible", joins the Avon family on July 28 and stars Martha Henry and . Stephen Macht. The setting is 17th century Salem when a conniving girl cries "Witch" and sends the whole town into a panic. It will be directed by John Wood. Next week, we'll take a look at the 1975 Stratford music season and the productions on The Third Stage which look very fascinating this year. Tickets may be ordered now; if you write the Festival box office, they will send you a* brochure telling dates, prices, etc., a cute little booklet that Will fit neatly in your pocket. Richard Dumas,. a public works official, has launched a campaign directed at the city's pigeon population to sell them on the idea of moving their present scattered living quarters to a new, heated, high:rise amp - they respond, this will confine their "droppings" to a small area in front of CoMplex G (a 32 - storey government office tower) andleave all the other buildings clean and free. The campaign was set in motion by locking two pairs of pigeons in the luxury coop in the belief that, sooner or later, tlie rest would follow. The latest campaign consists of bringing a daily supply of pigeon feed to the coop which is heated with red heating lamps. Another method was tried last year but it didn't quite work out.
