4DESTIONS WOMEN 'SK
Why are some
girls tomboys?
By ELEANOR B.
ROIDGERSON, M.O.
Q. Do some girls have more
male hormones than they
should?
A. The amount of male -type
(androgenic) and female -
type (estrogenic) hormones
in a given woman varies —
from person to person, from
day to night, throughout the
month, under stressful situa-
tions. It is obvious that some
females are better at sports
than others and some d'e\relop
more muscles and more ag-
gressive attitudes than
others. Hormone levels in all
kinds of women have not been
thoroughly tested.
We know that where there
are irregularities in the
menses and sometimes
absence. of menses, along
with the male -type distribu-
tion of hair over the body,
• there is an increase in
androgenic hormones.
Obesity is also present. -This
picture may be seen when
there is a tumor of the
adrenal gland, near the kid-
ney, and when there are en-
larged ovaries with-thiCk cov-
erings that prevent ovulation.
The abnormal cases have
been studied because women
complain of irregular peri-
ods, or wonder ,why they are
not able to get pregnant. The
hormone levels of cases
with no problems are largely
unknown. It is usually hard to
be sure whether a girl is a
tomboy because of the way
she is made, or because of the
environment she is brought
up in.

Q. If a mother has a
gonorrheal infection that she
does net know about and it
goes untreated, does she have
to worry about the health of
her baby?
A. If a mother has an un-
diagnosed gonorrheal infec-
tion, the bacteria causing it
are probably located in the
cervical glands. When the
cervix dilates during labor to
let the baby through, these
glands may free the bacteria
which then can infect the
baby's eyes ..As the; baby
passes through the birth
canal. For this reason the law
requires application of silver
nitrate, or antibiotic, a the
baby's eyes to keep them free
of infection.
Q. is it all right to wash my
hair during my menstrual
peri'. ,; ?
A. Of course. Nearly every
woman notices changes dur-
ing the menstrual period.
Hair seems oiler and
stringier. Keeping it clean
boosts morale and is just as
important as bathing the rest
of the body.
Q. My husband and I are
seriously thinking of getting
ourselves sterilized. We have
two children and want no
more. Which of us should do
it? Which would have the
fewer complications, or
would there be any complica-
tion?
A. The first thing for you to
consider when it coi'nes to
sterilization procedures, be
they blocking the Fallopian
- -tubes in -the male, or the vas.
deferens in the male, is the
permanency of the operation.
You should go into it with no
reservations and no plans to
try to get it undone sometime
in the future. Reuniting tubes
and vas have a high percent-
age of failure. You have to
keep in mind that the time
may come when you want an-
• other child.
Then, when you fully real-
ize that sterilization has to be
considered a permanent pro-
cedure, you have to decide
which of you will have the op-
eration. Vasectomy in the
male' is simpler than closing
the tubes in the female
through the abdomen. How-
ever, the female is the one
who carries the child and, if
sterilization is being done for
reasons of health, it should be
done on the one who needs
protecting.
Both operations have their
possible complications, as
any operation does. You
should discuss the specifics
. with your doctor. The overall
safety is high and many thou-
sands of ligations and vasec-
tomies have been done with
happy results. Neverthelessi
it is wise not to rush into this
surgery:hasti y' You can use
some other form of contra-
ception while you weigh the
pros and cons.

KEEPING DRY— Who but a parent is likely to be around
to make a picture Poke this young streaker still determined
to keep dry?
Sandi Jones
has new son.
Sandi Jones, the London host of
the popular CBC Radio program
Family Favorites has resumed
her program duties following a
brief absence to give birth to a
new son, Mark, born January 25.
Sandi, whose married name is
Mitchener, met her husband
Tony in Gibraltar in 1971 while
she was working on the Rock for
the British Forces Broadcasting
Service. The Mitcheners now
make their home in Kent, Eng-
land.
Family' Favorites has been on
the air since 1968 and Sandi Jones
became the regular host in 1973
taking over from Michael Aspel.
But Sandi was not a stranger to
Canadian listeners since she had
acted as d "stand in" for Aspel
whenever he was away or on
holidays. The Canadian host is

Take 'natural'
children pictures
Bill Paul, who has been with the
"program ever since it began.

By GILBERT HILL -
There are many different
roads traveled into the fasci-
nating. hobby — or profession
— of photography, but possi-
bly the widest trail - s been
made by parents wh . , have
bought their first good
era with the arrival of the
first child.
And learning how to make -
successful children's pictures
has opened the door both to
fur) and national reputations
as exhibition photographers,
because child photography is
not that simple, and requires
development of techniques
that can be widely applied —
while having a model avail-
able to try them out.
There are two routes to go
child photography, candids
or more formal portraits, and
&little different technique is
required for the different ap-
proaches — although the
same camera can be used.
The trick, of course, is to
get "natural" pictures, and
this, actually is the trick for
every other kind of photogra-
phy, except possibly for some
of the modern "special pro- .
cesses."
And it is in candid photog-
raphy where the parent, with
just a little care and thought,
can often beat the profession-
al in producing the kind of
pictures that will become
more valuable to the family
over the years, because, after
all, the parent has far more
opportunity to make the
"natural" picture.
On the other hand, the pro-
fessional rarely gets to see
the child until hair is combed,
face washed, and all dressed
up until the child is most un-
comfortable in his unnatural
appearance at best — or com-
_ple'tely mad about the whole
thing at worst.
So, learn to males„pictures
as they happen. This means
that a camera should be
loaded with film, with flash in
place, and handy to where
children are most likely to be
in the home. It means that the
camera should be used often
enough so that film doesn't
have a chance to deteriorate
before development — and
flash batteries will not lose
their charge.
This often means that it is
better to load with shorter
films, 20 instead of 36 frames
fo'r 35 -mm, for instance. And
it is well to remember' that
film spoils faster after expo-
sure than before.
Simple, flash -on -camera
can produce some great fam-
ily pictures although the ex-
pert may frown on the "flash
shadows” which are evident.
The real problem here is
n
overexposure of film, how-
ever. So, follow the "guide
numbers." Believe the in-
structions — until you prove
they're wrong.
It is difficult_ to believe that
such a small burst of light'—
s° little "mottled sunlight" —
can be so ,powerful. So, the
tendency is to open up the
lens just slightly "to be
sure." The result, particular-
ly with closeups is white
"burned out" faces and de-
struction of detail in high-
lights.
An underexposed slide, on
the 'other hand, will display
far more color and a slightly
underexposed negative will
produce all of the detail, .in
both highlight and shadow, of
which either color or mono-
chrome paper is capable.
While "candid" is
this country, although it is part of
a two-hour program in Britain
and is listened to by more than 20
million BBC listeners every Sun-
day.
Besides playing records re-
quested for relatives and friends
on the other side of the Atlantic,
the program has recently begun
accepting requests for flowers to
be sent to relatives on special
occasions.
Listeners wishing a record to
be played on the program or
flowers to be sent to a relative in
Britain should send their re-
quests to: Family Favorites,
