BETTER ENGLISH,
By D. C. Williams
WORDS OFTEN MISUSED
Do not say, "Let's you and
me sit down for a little talk."
"Let's" is a contraction of "let
us." Therefore, the "you and
me" is supeffluous and should
be omitted.
Avoid the expression,
"ravenously hungry. Since
"ravenous" in itself means
"extremely hungry or
voracious," the expression is a
redundancy.
To "feel GOOD" means to
feel ' happy or to be in good
spirits. To "feel WELL" means
to be in good health.
l)o not say, "I know of no
reason why we should go."
Much better to say, "I know of
no reason FOR OUR GOING."
MISPRONOUNCED
Percale (the fabric).
Rhymes with "per sale," and
not with "per pal," often heard.
Italics. Pronounce as IT-al-
icks, not as "EYE-tal-icks."
Obesity. Pronounce second
yllitOle, as "beers." not . as
"bess,' sometimes heard.
Literati (intellectuals).
Pronounce lit -a -rah -ti, accent
on third, syllable.
OFTEN MISSPELLED
Lea (a meadow) . Lee ( a
sheltered place; also, opposite
to the wind). Objets d'arte
(artistic objects); no "c" in the
first word. Reclaim (to recover,
redeem, or remodel). Reclame
(publicity;- self -
advertisement) . Prerogative;
observe the initial `,'pre," and
not "perogative." Dependent;
"ent." - Defendant; "ant."
Immunity (freedom from
disease, pain, and arrest) .
Impunity (freedom from
punishment or loss ) .
WORD STUDY
"Use a word three times and
it iss yours." Let us increase -our
vaabulary by mastering one
word each day. Words for this
lesson:
PARAGON; model of per-
fection or excellence. "He is a
paragon of integrity."
RECIPROCAL (adjective) ,
given or felt by each toward the
other; mutual. "There is a
reciprocal respect between the
two adversaries."
PLAUSIBLE; having an
appearance of truth or reason;
credible; believable. "His,
excuse for being late is
plausible."
DISDAINFUL; scornful;
contemptuous. "There was_ a
disdainful reserve in the
woman's manner."
PATENT (adjective) ;
evident; avious. "This, is a
patent breach of good' man-
ners."
