ding ring. While this suffices as a
wedding present, he can choose
to give her another special token
of affection, again, usually a
piece of jewelry, but there is no
hard and fast rule. Whatever the
groom feels she would like in
most cases is the best choice.
Third finger, left hand?
This custom is said to
. have originated with the
ancients who believed that
the third finger of the left
hand was connected di-
rectly to the heart, by a
vein. In fact, as late as the
16th century, when "mod-
ern man" was awakening
to many medical truths,
the English Prayer Book
of 1549 specifies the left
hand as the hand for bride
and groom. The custom
may not apply to people of
other than English origin.
If you have somehow got into a
hassle and you're upset with one
another ... get it out of your sys-
tem, if you can, during the day,
for itis extremely hazardous to a
good marriage to go to bed mad.

Gifts to enjoy 'from this day forward'
The bride sets a
sophisticated table
Today's bride is sophisticated,
experienced, well -traveled and
better educated. She knows her-
self and she wants what goes with
that self . . . especially in her
home. And right from the start.
The best place to start, is with
the bride's 'table appointments.
The silver, china and crystal that
help establish her as a gracious,
imaginative hostess whose guests
are comfortably at ease, well
taken care of and eager for
another invitation.
When she -picks her patterns at
her favorite jewelry store, her
jeweler is ready with all the-help-
ful
he-help-ful advice she needs. After she
makes her selections, her jeweler
will register her patterns. in his
bridal registry. At the same time
he enters the items the bride
specifically wants to complete
her service and entertain ade-
quately in her favorite style. The
jeweler's bridal registry is an
automatic gift list for well-
wishers. Their purchases are re-
corded, too, preventing duplica-
tions, embarrassing returns and
those occasional white elephants.
How does the gifting go for the
bride with a definite mind of her
own? Starting with silver flat-
ware, the pivotal point of her
table setting, she will need a
mimimum of four place settings
to do any kind of entertaining.
After that come individual items
of the bride's preference such as
place knives and forks, dessert
silver, tall drink spoons. Serving
pieces are especially welcome in
.a newlywed household because of
their multiple uses.
Silver holloware has the same
wonderful property, which is why
trays, bowls, vegetable dishes,
etc., share priority in bridal
registry listings.
Four place settings of china are
needed before the bride can set a
guest table. Some china patterns
are available in three-piece place
settings, a more attractive wed-
ding gift for some. Oven to -table -
to -dishwasher, and even to
freezer, are attributes in serving
pieces today's bride really appre-
ciates. In some instances they
are matchmates to her china. A
definite plus.
Crystal stemware is wedding
giftable in traditional cuttings for
a more formal look. Color is the
casual cue. Goblets, sherbets,
wine glasses, all wine related
items, matching and distinctive
barware are for the table, and
home, of today's sophisticated
bride.

Compact laundry saves bride's
and groom's time—and squabbles
Who's going to take the wash to
the neighborhood laundry center :
you or your husband? You can
eliminate that squabble and save
time too ik you have a compact
portable washer and dryer in
your home.
The smart bride is one who ar-
ranges the schedule so that her
job and the household chores
don't turn what should be a happy
time into a nightmare of confu-
sion.
Even if you've never done the
wash before, it's simple to keep
ahead of the chores if you have a
compact washer and dryer. That
way you'll save time spent traip-
sing back and forth to the lawn=
'dromat — and, in the long run,
you'll save money, too;
For many couples, the first
years of marriage are spent on,

the move and a washer that re
quires a plumbing hook-up, may
not be the best buy. But a port-
able compact home laundry
center — a washer, dryer and
stack stand — that takes up just
241/2 inches ()Moor space could be
the ideal solution of your laundry
chores, especially if job transfers
necessitate moving or you're
planning to live in rental apart-
ments.
Portable compact washers in-
clude models with true agitator
wash action just like the big
machines, in cabinets that are
only 24 -inches wide, 21 -inches
deep and 32 -inches high. Though
small, they have the wash cycles
you need for all your fabrics.
The line of compact dryers in-
cludes both 240 -volt and gas
models that dry as fast as full-
size units. Both of these models
must be vented.
For all-purpose, anywhere -use,
a portable 120 -volt model may be
your best bet. It requires no
special wiring or venting. All you
do is plug it in and start drying.
-And, when you move, it's easy
to transport the compact washer
and dryer. Even the warranty
travels with you.
PERFECT FOR NEWLYWEDS and small families, this
portable washer has fill and drain hoses that attach to a fau-
cet in the same manner as a portable dish washer—a real aid
to the bride and groom.
Gift -giving suggestions for
the groom, in the spotlight
While much of the wedding
spotlight focuses ,On the bride, it
does take two, and the groom
does come in for his share of gift-
giving and receiving.
Perhaps the gift with the
greatest sentimental value is the
gift the groom gives to his soon-
to-be wife when she accepts his
marriage proposal. While mostrof
us think of the engagement
present as the traditional ring, it
doesn't necessarily have to be so.
With conventions constantly
changing and most couples eager
to do their own thing, this gift can
also be another piece of jewelry
or some other beautiful thing
she's fond of. Maybe a painting or
lithograph, or an exquisite piece
of porcelain, depending on her
tastes.
The groom also gifts his attend-
ants in the wedding party.
Again, this gift should be a
thoughtful and personal expres-
sion with a more elaborate cnoite
for the best man and identical
gifts for the ushers. Popular gift
ideas for the attendants include
small silver objects like lighters
or pocketknives or leather acces-
sories. .
