*Mal presentation of the Juno
Awards, those little Canadian
tiklibits that say who has the
•lit to be called the top re-
eerdiing artists in the country.
It is an all -Canadian deal, which
is good, since it recognizes
many artists who might not
have -a remote chance in inter-
national recording circles.
'Phis was the fifth year the
awards have been presented
and the proceedings were tele-
cast live from the Queen Eliz --
beth Theatre in Toronto. Paul
Anka came from the U.S. to be
master of ceremonies, leading
off the whole evening by sing-
ing his controversial song,
"You're Having ' My Baby",
which he insists he wrote for
his wife, though the words do
not exactly imply that. Anka
can be a great m.c. and he
came across with some funny
lines during the. show. But he
came across with too many re-
marks that sounded like sar-
casm to me, like he was the big
city boy coming back to make
fun of the hick town. Maybe
that was just my imagination—
but I didn't like some of his
smart-alecky remarks!
The girls on the show looked
.like there had_ been a rummage
sale just before showtime. Anne
Murray was resplendent in an
outfit' that made her look like
a blimp. In fact, she didn't
even sing very well.
But one thing you gotta say
about 'Canadians: when they
make a star they are loyal! And
again this . year, Anne and her
friend, Gordon Lightfoot, walk-
ed off .with Junos for best
Canadian vocalists of the year.
She also took the best country
female ' vocalist award. Not
that they don't deserve it, mind

you. Gordie has come a long
way since the days he was hoof-
ing on 'the 'Country Hoedown"
television series and it's been
anything but an easy fight for
him.
The Charlton Show Band
knocked the Mercey Brothers
from their pedestal and took
the award for the best country
group. Don't kid yourself;
people are still buying the
Mercey records, too. And It was
nice to see someone else have
a turn at it. Stompin' Tom Con-
nors, another boy who has had
a hard row to hoe, was named
the best country vocalist and
Lightfoot was winner of the
bent folksanger award.
Bachman Turner Overdrive
took two top awards, best group
and best album. And Terry
Jack's rendition of the beau-
tiful Rod McKuen tune, 'Sea-
sons in The Sun", was named
best single recording of the
year.
Paul Anka was named the
Canadian composer of the year,
an award deserved, not so much
for "You're Having My Baby"
but for all the other gorgeous
stuff he writes, not only for
himself but for other famous
singelrs. 11e could probably re-
tire tom rrow and live an ele-
gant life on his earnings from
"My Way" which he wrote for
ole blue eyes Sinatra!

The dramatic story of one
man's fight to clean up a town
and the struggles he encoun-
ters while "Walking Tall" were
the subject of a movie which
recently played in movie hous-
es all over the country and last
week was shown on Global Tel-
evision.
Buford Purser was an ex -
wrestler who came home to
McNairy County, Tennessee,
only to find it filled with cor-
ruption and vice. He fought to
clean it up, at great Bost to him-
self and his family. In 1967, af-
ter he thought he had won his
battle, he and his wife were
ambushed on a country drive.
She diedas, a' result of wounds.
But it smartened up the town
and supporters finally showed
NA how much behind Pusser
they were.
"Walking Tall" became . the
first movie of Pusser's life and
ended with that sad day in ._
1967. It was such a hit that it.,
grossed more than $60 million.
Pusser, who' was consultant for
the picture (his role was played
by „professional actor Joe Jen
Baker), immediately planned tiV
make "Walking Tall Part II",
in which he would portray him-
. self and which he would pro-
duce. But it was never to be,
for ' last year Pusser lost his
life in a car crash.
Plans for eise picture went
ahead, though, and in February
of this year, Jackson, Tennessee
became the location for shoot-
ing of the movie which is be-
ing produced by Charles Pratt.
Swedish *tor Bo Svenson is
playing Buford 'Pusser, the man
who walked tall for all too
short a lifetime.
