Re-elect Mrs. Roy Galway
to head Huron -Perth UCW
Despite unfavorable weather
condition& over 325 ladies at-
tended the eighth annual meeting
off Huron -Perth Presbyterial of
the United Church Women on
Friday, Feb. 28 at Trinity United
Church, Listowel. The meeting
had been scheduled for Wednes-
day, Feb. 26, but had to be can-
celled due to a storm that para-
lyzed the area.
"Celebration" was the theme
for the event which honored the
50th anniversary of the formation
of the United Church of Canada.
The church was formed on June
10, 1925 following the union of the
Methodist, Presbyterian and
Congregational congregations.
Mrs. Roy Galway, Listowel,
was returned as president for her
second term, Other members of

Following the morning's
registration, Mrs. Roy Galway,
president welcomed all those in
attendance. Invitations had been
extended to the 75 United Church
Women's organizations that
make up the Huron -Perth Preby-
terial. A number of ladies attend-
ing were charter members.
A large imitation 50th an-
niversary cake decorated with
candles was featured at the front
of the church. Posters and
banners, hand -made by in-
dividual units, added flare to the
day's aLtivities.
During the lunch hour, Mrs.
James Broughton, Atwood, a
charter member of thee U.C.W.,
cut the anniversary cake.
A choir of • ladies from area
churches lead the singing with
Mrs. Frank Zurbrigg, Listowel,
as organist.
The morning's program
featured a pageant narrated by
Mrs. Mayme Wilkins of Lucknow.
It commenced with the staging of
the union of the Methodist,
Presbyterian and Congregational
congregations which was sym-
bolized by a "Wedding of 1925".
Taking the part of three brides
were Mrs. Alma , Ankenman,
Listowel; Mrs. Charles Walkom,
Fullerton and Mrs. Bert Alton,
Lucknow. Mrs. Ankenman wore
the hand -made wedding dress
that she wore on her own wedding
day, Sept. 1, 19.25. She was the
first bride to be married at
Mayne United Church following
church union in 1925.
In recognition of the beginning
of the. United Church Women's
organization a "1962 Wedding"
'signified when Huron WMS and
WA became Huron United
Church Women and Perth WMS
and WA became Perth United
Church Women. This was
followed by the staging of a "1968
Wedding" signifying the forma-
tion of Huron -Perth Presbyterial
United Church Women with the
union of Huron UCW, Perth UCW
and the women of the Evange-
lical United Brethren congrega-
tion.
Members of Atwood Lnited
Church, UCW, led the worship
service. Others taking part in the
day's activities included Rev.
-William Bell, minister -of Trinity
United Church, Listowel; Mrs.
Millan Moore, Whitechurch;
Mrs. Cecil Burrill, Mitchell and
Mrs. Charles Posliff of Monkton,
who compiled a history review
and a "look" into the future of the
UCW; Mrs. Margaret Ward, Lon-
don, guest speaker and President
of the London Conference UCW;
as well as Mrs. Bert Alton of
Lucknow. Mrs. Stuart Shier, St.
Marys gave the report of the
nominations.
Throughout the church, ar-
chive books, literature books and
church related material were on
display.
During the service special
mention was made by Mrs. Ward
on.the recent death of Dr. Harriet
Christie of Toronto, an outstand-
ing church leader who died Jan.
20 in Edmonton, Alta., while
visiting friends.
Born in Owen Sound, Dr.
Christie was deputy secretary of
the mission division of the Unite
Church of Canada and a membei
the Federal Advisory Council
on the status of women. In 1972,
she became the first woman to be
nominated as a church
moderator. She declined the
nomination. Dr. Christie was an
ordained minister, although she
never held a pastoral charge and
was a vice-president of the
Canadian Council of Churches.
Mrs. Ralph Turgey is president
of the host UCW at Trinity United
Church, Listowel.
SHEILA BURKE and Mrs. J. Beattie listen carefully as the
Girl Guides present the customs and traditions of Scouts in
Japan, Switzerland, Australia and Spain. After the
presentations, each group. served foods typical of those
countries.
A DIFFERENT WEDDING—In honor of the 50th anniversary of the United Church of
Canada, the eighth annual meeting of United Church Women, Huron -Perth Presbyterial,
carried out tnerr event in a special manner when a "wedding" was enacted. The marriage
signified the union of the Methodist, Presbyterian and Congregatinal churches on June 10,

hostesses, assisted by Miss Mar-
garet Dane and Paul Rochyer of
Kitchener at a miscellaneous
shower held in the Gorrie United
Church Sunday School room on
Saturday evening in honor of
Miss Jean Brown, bride elect.
Contests were enjoyed by the
many local friends of the bride.
THE RISING ROLLS
WHITECHURCH — Leader
Mrs. Archie Purdon opened her
home for the meeting of The Ris-
ing Rolls with president Kathy
Purdon in charge.- For the roll
call, six member exhibited a
piece of batter bread. The
minutes of the last meeting were
read by Wendy Kay and Lori Ann
Jamieson.
Mrs. Elliott discussed the gond-
ness of bread and food guides for
health. Mrs. Purdon discussed
dough for rolls, sour dough
starter and bread. Each of the
girls demonstrated different
kinds of rolls.
Material to be used for book
covers was also discussed.
The next meeting will be held
March 17 at the home of Mrs..
Walter Elliott. Roll call will be
answered by bringing a loaf of

to gide concert
at St. Andrew's
The February meeting of the
St. Andrew's Couple's Club was
held on Wednesday, February 26,
with Mr. and Mrs. Jim Carr and
Mr. and Mrs. Morley Bushell in
charge.
A hymn wassung, with scrip-
ture and meditation being given
by, Mrs. Carr. Gordon Leggatt
sang two solos, "I'd Rather Have
Jesus" and "It Took a Miracle".
Mrs. J. Donaldson, chairman of
the pommittee arranging the per-
formance by the Schneider Male
Chorus on Wednesday, April 2,
reported on the progress being
made for this corning event. All
members of the Couples' Club
will be selling tickets.
Mrs. Donaldson introduced
Mrs.' Gertie Tiffin who showed
slides of her repent trip to Europe
and narrated on her visits to
France, Germany, Austria,
Switzerland, Hungary, Yugo-
slavia and Italy.
A social hour followed.
