Toiler Cranston is not a skater;
he is an experience! He has been
called by some of his critics "an
earthbound Nureyev" and he
lends to his skating the same kind
of flair, the same kind of
dramatic excitement as does
Nureyev to his dancing.
He is our champion and al-
though 1 do not feel all champions
are there because they are the
best, he undoubtedly deserves the
title. CTV carried the Canadian
figure skating championships
from Quebec City the last week-
end in January and last week,
presented a half-hour special en-
titled simply "Toller Toiler", the
word toiler in German meaning
magnificent and hence the nick-
name which he acquired last year
in Munich.
He was and is appreciated in
Europe more than here, probably
because everything Europeans
do is an art and he makes skating
an art. He does not dash onto the
ice and jump around to any kind
of music. His music is carefully
chosen and choreqgraphed as'
carefully as a ballet adagio. His
own words, spoken in this special,
wherein he skated to the famous
Pagliacci music, were proof that
the music controls his mind and
in turn dictates his movements on
the ice.
Toller, off the ice, is an artist
and when his skating career is
over he will no doubt be back at
the easel withFbrush_ln hand. This
is another reason why he inter-
prets skating moves as he does.
He began skating when he was
eight and competed in his 'first
national event in 1964 when he
won the Canadian junior champ-
ionship. In 1967, he placed first in
the Quebec Winter Games and
the following two years, he
placed third in the Canadian
senior competitions. In 1971 he

Following on Toiler's heels,
was another 'experience' - the.
Strauss waltz which is not merely
music but soli ething from
fantasy world which,can do more
for your state of mind than any
other kind off secular music. It
was a special produced in
Germany, different than I had
imagined but the music made up
for it. Somehow yon, imagine
huge ballroom scenes when you
hear the waltz. There was only
one of these. But it gave us a look
at European everyday life and
closed with a beautiful blossom -
time tour along the Blue Danube
with the most popular Strauss
waltz providing the background.

Sonny tried his'luck at his,ow'nn
show. He bombed! Now comes
his former better halt, Cher, last
week charging onto the CTV net-
work with her show. Her guest
list was impressive, Raquel
Welch and if she is not the most
talented star in Hollywood, she is
certainly one of the most
gorgeous; Wayne Rogers who is a
very likeable and funny guy; and
Tatum O'Neal, daughter of Ryan
O'Neal and Joanna Moore, and a
very talented little girl. (She won
an Oscar for her supporting role
in "Paper Moon", stole the show
from her dad.)
Cher is no hostess but she is
talented and people will watch
her if for no other reason thhan to
see what getup she's wearing at
the moment. She would wear a
light bulb if she could get into it;.
and svelte as she's looking these
days, she may soon be able to!
She doesn't need Sonny;e can
be straight man or funny "man.
And she sure has come •a long
way from- the stringy -haired
barefoot girl_ -that, stole. -.her
hubby's dungarees and belted out
a song. What a gorgeous gal she
is now!
Will she hang in? Remains to
be seen. 'She can manage alone
but can the public forget her
image as Sonny's wife and part-
ner. Lucy survived without Desi,
now can Mrs. Bono go it alone?
Tune in next fall for the exciting -
episode in the series!
