Atoms lose in close one game The local Atom hockey team lost a real squeaker to Mitchell to even their best of three series at one win each and a tie forcing a fourth game in Mitchell to decide who goes on in the OMHA play- downs. No matter who wins the Kin Bantams win and lose The Wingham Kinsmen Ban- tams were at home to the Goderich Bantams on Friday night for a fine exhibition game of hockey. In the first period Larry Milosevic fired one home with. the assists going .to Paul Foxton and Mark Passmore. Keith Cameron made it 2-0 for the home club with a sizzling slapshot from the blue- Goderich replied with one goal late in the first to make it Wingham 2, Goderich one. There was no scoring in the second, but the Wingham Ban- tams took_ command of the third period scoring four. Paul Foxton assisted on two goals by Mike Montgomery, while Gord Kina- han and Keith Cameron each got singles. Goderich scored one to' make the final score 6-2 in favor of the home club. The tables were turned the following Saturday when the Wingham Kinsmen Bantams travelled to Goderich for a return match. The Goderich club came on strong in the first period, scor- ing three goals in the first 13 minutes of play. Sheldon Jones scored the only goal in the second with assists going to Doug Mc- Gregor and Davie Kieffer. In the third Laurie Haines notched one, Doug McGregor assisting on that one. Goderich came back to score two more making the final score Goderich 5, Wingham 2. Local teams chosen for championships The fifth annual National Clas- sified Bowling championship house rounds were held at the Wingham lanes on Sunday. One team will represent the men: class one, up to 165 aver- age, Andy Rodger with a triple of 615; class two, 166-185 average, Doug Neil with a triple of 609; class three, 186-205 average, Les Tervit with a triple of 737; class four, 206-225 average, Wilf La- tronico with a triple of 627; class five, 226 and up, Bruce Machan with a triple of 725. The first place ladies' team is comprised of: class one, up to 150 average, Rina Jouwsma with a triple of 527; class two, 151-165, Beth Skinn with a triple of 590; class three, 166-185, Jane Willie with a triple of 664; class four, 186-205, Dianne English with a triple of 660; class five, 206 and' up, Shirley Storey with a 731 triple. The third team to- represent Wingham will be a ladies' team : class one, Helen McBurney, 500 triple; class two, Millie Black- well 559; class three, Ruby Mac- Lennan 646; class four, Louise Welwood 620; class five, Jean King 632. These three teams will com- pete in a zone retloff on Sunday, March 23. The place is to be decided by the provincial as- sociation. 1 1 fourth game each team can hold its head up high as they both played some very thrilling hock- ey for their local fans. Wingham opened the scoring with a goal by Greg Storey assist- ed by Doug Wood and Bill Brophy at the 5:40 mark of the first period. Mitchell came right back at the 8:10 mark and tied it up, but Wingham was not long in get- ting that one back with a goal by Bill Brophy, with assists going to Joe Tiffin and Brent Day to end the first period with a 2-1 lead. Mitchell came out with fire in their eyes in the second perigd and picked up two goals by Alex Graf to give them the lead again 3-2. Wingham fought back again and got the equalizer at the 5:40 mark with a goal scored by Ron Schistad,. but Mitchell not to be outdone, came on strong and fired another by Graf to take the lead 4-3 into the third period. After a good pep talk in the dressing rooms, the local lads came out on the fly and tied it up once again on a goal by Joe Tiffin assisted by Daryl Holmes, but Mitchell found the range once more and that ended the .scoring in what was a see -saw battle from start to finish with the lead changing hands three times. Cheers Everyone enjoys a circus, and the Wingham Figure Skating Club's presentation of "Circus on Ice" was no exception. The en- thusiastic skaters performed before a near capacity crowd at the arena Saturday night. The program started with a roar as six little tots made their way onto the ice in their lion cos- tumes. Blaine McKittrick, Sheryl Hanula, Jeffrey Mann, Dwight Chambers, Steven Thynne and Terry Deer certainly captured audience attention as they anxiously awaited for their cues and 'miss -cues'. No circus is complete without popcorn sellers, and they were on hand Saturday night as well. Rachelle Campeau, Natalie Campeau, Cathy Walker, Karen Wood, Diane Orien, Cindy Evens, Cheryl Beattie, Tracy Mac - m and applause for "Circus on Ice" %onalA, Cheryl Gvreluk, and Shorty is rooks, all in appropriate attire, delighted the audience with their routine. The only thing missing was the popcorn! Elephants are known to excel at tricks .. . but an elephant on skates? It could only happen at an ice carnival. .•rett Mac- Donald, Sandy Robinson, Valerie Ricker, Audrey Baxter, Rhonda Rathburn, and Suzanne Ware- ham portrayed the elephants of the circus. Jill McCutcheon, Debra Prior, Kelly Lougheed, Lisa Hamilton, Caryn Mann, Elizabeth Brydes, Kim McGregor, Maureen Beattie, Lisa Cook, Paula . Cox, Sheila Anderson and Elizabeth Kaufman dressed in bright pink costumes brought the candy floss onto the ice. Blaine Moore and Danny Gordon teamed up to pre - d YBC Bowling JUNIOR BANTAMS Joanne Henry, leading the gals this week, had a high single of 142 and a high double of 256. It was Michael Pletch all the way for the boys; he had a 174 single and a 304 double. Other games 'over 125 were bowled by Kevin Smith 149; Randy Bain 133; Robert Willis 132; Stephen Gaunt 125; Danny Mansell 145; Tim Stainton 135, 126; Tom Foulon 167; Allan Jack- son 129; John Leedham 130, 130; Michael Heard 127; Andy Jarvis 131; Greg Laidlaw 144. • The Peanuts are still in first place, advancing three points to 63. The -Chips are still second with 58 and the Cheezies 54. The Pop- corns have 47; Toffies 41 and Popsicles 38. . BANTAMS The standings are getting closer in the Bantam league. Still in first place ware the Braves at 64.but the Sabres increased five points and are now threatening at 61. The Flyers are third with 54 and are followed by the Blues 47; Seals 40 and Islanders 37. High scores for the gals were chalked up by Debra Wittig with her 180 single and 301 double. For the boys it was Blair Mansell's 171 single and 302 double. Other good games were rolled by Pam Reid 157; Lynda Wittig 155; Julie Hayden 162; Reuben Jacklin 158; Daryl Holmes 155; . John May 154; Brad Gerrie 169; Wayne Thompson 164. JUNIORS Jamie Smith topped the boys to send the pins flying to the tune of a 239 single and 447 double. Nancy King had the girls' high single of 221 and Pam Gerrie had a nice 413 double. Some good games were chalked up by the Juniors: Joanne Anger 189, 194; Brenda Foxton 204, 199; Pam Gerrie 207, 206; Esther Nethery 188; Janet Storey 175; Rhonda Lee 202; Jeff MacLaurin 188; Jamie Smith 208; Robert Wharton 177; Paul Cerson 175; Sheldon Jones 213; Jay Mac- Laurin 192, 180; Bill Ohm 193. Not really worrying, though they did add tree points to their total, are the hops who still lead with 73 poin s. The Rats are second with 58 but right behind conic the C''pi'uts at 57. Atoms Icse to Mitchell The Wingham Atoms lost a close game to Mitchell last Satur- day to the score of 2-0. The boys gave it their best effort but just couldn't' find the range to get a score mounted. This was the fourth game of the best of three series to register a winner for the OMHA playdowns. The Wingham lads deserve a lot of credit for the way. they finally went down to defeat arid were 'really very close to taking it all when they actually out -seared their opponents 13-12 in the four game series. WITH A CRACK -of their whips and a flash of skates, the "Ring Masters" ran a brilliant show in the Saturday evening "Circus on Ice" at the Wingham arena. Ring masters are a must at the circus. Donna Steckly, Andrew -Kaufman, Beth White, Pamela Passmore, onna rooks, and Denise Walker were on hand in case needed, and at the same time displayed their skating talents. Catherine Cardiff, Michelle McCutcheon, Leanne Cossitt, Joan Huether, Cheryl Edwards, Joanne Anger, Chris' tine Orien, Cathy Cruickshank, Janet Wood, Pam Gerrie, Sylvia Beard, and Carol Wheeler brought the bare facts of the circus to light as they presented the Girlie Girlie -Kick Line. The clowns won the hearts of the youngsters in the crowd, and were played by •tobbie Mid'; Te- ton, !Nobby Ricker, Lindsay Ten Pas, Lesley Ten Pas, Heidi Strong, Jeffrey Layton, Murray Nethery, Annette Carter, Brian Steffler, Dale McFarlane and Sean Rathburn. The trapeze act in the circus is usually considered daring and dangerous, but this was not the case at the circus on ice. Instead it was a display of gracefulness and charm. Taking YOU'VE NEVER SEEN a horse like this, unless you saw. the prancing "Horse Dance" performed by Blaine Moore and Danny GordonRin the "Circus on Ice" Saturday evening. CURTIS MOORE and Lori Lee Gavreluk perform a delight- ful duet dance on ice at the "Circus on Ice" at the Wingham arena. • part uta Ibis act were Kim Mc- Gregor, Caryn Mann, Jill Mc- Cutecheen, Sandra Thompson, Paula Cot, eesa Cook, Eliza- beth Brydes, Bonnie Evens, Elizabeth Kaufman, Andrea Mc- Gregor, Sheila Anderson, Lois Pennington, Maureen Beattie, Lisa Hamilton, Debra Prior, Karen Alexander and Kelly Lougheed. A truly professional presenta- tion best sums up the per- formance of Carol Wheeler and Blaine Moore. They presented two `dances on ice' and received heart -felt applause from the audience for both performances. Lori Lee Gavreluk and Curtis Moore, and April Moore and Danny Gordon are to be com- mended for their duet presenta- tuon$ as well, Solo presentations by Lori Lee Gavreluk, April Moore, Curtis Moore, Joanne Anger, Cheryl Gavreluk, Catherine Cardiff, Carol Wheeler and Michelle Mc- Cutcheon revealed some promis- ing young skaters and fantastic ice presence. A fitting finale for the entire performance was the Precision Line involving ' 26 skaters. It takes much time and effort from not only the skaters in- volved in, a performance such as the '.'Circus on Ice", but from the executive and club professionals as well. Without them the twenty- third annual carnival of the Wingham Figure Skating Club would not have been possible. It was a great success!
