Wooden spoons
make plaques
By GEMS BUROKER
it POLLY UUNTSINGER
Ara eighth grade student in
Napa, California, has discov-
ered something many other
people are also learning these
days: what is "nostalgia" to
one generation often proves to
be brand new to a younger
one.
Rummaging in her grand-
mother's pantry, Patty came
across several old-fashioned
wooden spoons - a .rarity in
her home where plastic, Teti
Ion, and stainless steel are the
materials from which most
kitchen utensils are made.
She soon found herself an
enjoyable rainy day project
once she brought out some
paint and thick, bright woolen
yarn. She discovered that; as
with any smooth wood sur
face, the, worn inside bowl of
the spoons made excellent, if
tiny, easels.
You can decorate a spoon in
a similar manner. Acrylic
paint is best, but tempora will
do. Or, if you find working
with a paint brush difficult on
h a small surface, use felt
of various colors instead.
Bright designs prove par-
ticularly attractive, and re-
mind one of the old-fashioned
European decorations that
seem to show up so often in
story -book kitchens.
With a bright bow tied at the
.4
top, two such decorated
spoons make a nice set for a
variety of ornamenting pur-
poses.
Glued to a suitable card-
board backing, framed spoons
can be hung as attractive wall
hangings. If you can obtain
some florist's clay which
keeps firmly without Sticking
like glue, it will provide a
good adhesive that won't
damage a smooth surface.
With a dot of this substance on
the rounded backs, a pair of
wooden spoons will cling to
the side of a stove, refrigera-
tor, or kitchen cabinet. They
also look like door decorators
that are held by magnets.
On the other hand, if Such
kitchen utensils are still
actively used, they can still be
made to look prettier. It's a
poor idea to paint the surface
that touches food and needs
lots of washing. However, if
you paint stripes, bright dots
or wavy lines on the length of
the handle, it is bound to bring
a smile to any cook's face.
Who knows what delicious
treats might be dished up if .
you "stir" yourself to do a
little ladle decorating?
+ + +
STILL SERVING - An old fashioned kitchen aid can
quickly become a decorato's aid when you spoon up some
ingenuity.

of their incomes on energy
