Who Were the stars that people
roost fine) stood in line to see
during 1974? The box office tali
the tale,. you know, and though
Noone really isn't a surprise, a
few in the top 20 are.
Did you break your neck to get
to see ."The Sting" or "The Way
We Were"? Well, join the club. So
did a lot of other people. Which
placed Robert Redford., the
blond, rugged, all-Amerlcan boy
on the top of the list of box office
attractions lase year. Number
Two honors went to - guess! No,
it wasn't Paul Newman - it was
Clint Ehstwood, who was No. 1
last year. Third was guess!
Right Paul Newman. And fourth
place went to - remember "The
Way We Were"? Redford
wouldn't have been half as
appealing without the girl,
Barbra Streisand. And she is the
only woman who made it into the
top ten, believe it or not. (Julie
Andrews, who for the past
several years has been in the list,
didn't even make the lop 20 this
year.)
After Streisand came Steve
McQueen, then Burt Reynolds,
Charles Bronson, Jack Nichol-
son, Al Pacino, John Wayne who
has made the top -ten list for the
past 25 years (some record!),
Dustin Hoffman, would you
believe comedian Woody Allen
(?),James Caan, the seconid gal
to make it, Liza Minnelli,
Charlton Heston, Gene Hackman,
Jack Lemmon, No. 3 gal. Faye
Dunaway, George C. Scott and
Walter Matthau.
Looking over the list, it looks
like movie fans like the action
men, with the exception of our pal
Woody who always gives us a
lotta laughs. Noticed something
strange. It's hard to find a good
movie these days that Mom. and
Dad and the family can enjoy.
But I don't see many skin -flick
starrers in that list. Have we
finally grown up when it comes to
entertainment?
Another funny thing I noticed.
In the good old days, a star was
not a star unless he looked and •
acted and lived like a star away`,
from the cameras. But look at the
list and -how many of them have
the star -image? Most of them are
very prjvate people who ..need
their arms- twisted before they
will even attend a party. People
, flY VW* IA*
like Redford, EastwO4 Now
WM, Brontkent Wayne t frOffman,
Heston, Lemma, Scott andM*
thau want 4(0 to live a quiet life
with their faMilieS, aWay frOni
the ptiblic eye. Times sure have
changed! • " .
And times haVe Changed
another way, too. HeMetnber the
days when no One WO'uld dare
print a list like this and Ornit
Elizabeth Taylor's nanie? But of
course, what Can you eXpect
when you get lazy and Make MO
one picture a year?
Anyway, lhat's how it lOoks
from the box office. Money WO
and it's saying those 'are the _eters,
you and I pay to see. And another
thing - Burt Reynolds 'wouldn't
even be on the list if it weren'tfor
that nude centrefold in a leading
magazine, Which says something
else about our sick society. Does
a talented actor have to resort to
-that before people will notie.e
him?
