The House League played two
games last week, Walden's "Blue
Machine" ta\k ing on Marks'
"Jolly Green Giants" and IGA's
"Salmon Canners" going against
Stainton "Stingers".
Herb Kenyon drove in a pair for
Walden's and Gary Hopper, Bill
Ste. Marie, Kevin Wild and Kevin
Lee each scored once to give
them a masterful 6-2 victory over
Marks'. Mike Rintoul and Doug
Merkley hammered home
Marks' goals.
This was a well -played game of
hockey for the first two periods
but in the third there was just no
way of stopping the "Blue
Machine". '
The second game, played Fri-
day night, saw Stainton's clobber
IGA to the tune of 10-1. .The

With au all - out effort . in the
second period the B'oninen
registered a come-from.-behind0
to 3 win over the Port Elgin Bears
in Junior D action at the local
arena.
Port Elgin got the first goal of
the game, at 15:29'as they showed
good puck control in the Ironmen;
end with Murray Cobean string,
assists going to Pete Parker and
Arnie. Mittendorf. The Ironmen
pressed hard but time and time
again the puck was snatched at
the goal line by the quick glove of
Pbrt goalie Brian Dunlop. At
17:11 Port Elgin made it 2 to 0
when Gord Lamont let one go
from the point. The puck went
through a maize of players into
the lower corner of the net—one
of those screened shots on which
Ironmen goalie Benny Blackwell
had no chance: Su after 20
minutes the Ironmen found them-
selves on the short end of a 2 to 0
count.
Don't know what coach George
Skinn said between periods but
the Ironmen certainly hit the ice
on the fly. At 2:05 John Hender-
son, with a lead pass between the
bluelines, sent linemate Doug
Leitch home free. Doug stoPPed
two strides over the blueline and
fired a low bullet shot into the net
on the stick side. That goal
ignited the Ironmen attack and at
8:16 Graham Hamilton tied the
game on a screened shot—int(
the law right corner of the net.
Assists went to Murray McKague
and Phil Paquette. The Bears
were not ready to. roll over and
capitalized on a defensive lapse
Pod Bears 5-3
by the Ironmen when they
jumped into a 3 to 2 lead with
Gord L ,ones goal at 112:32. The
Ironmen got at one back et
15:08 as Murray Black shovelled
one through the legs of a Port
Elgin checker. The pack caught
the Port Elgin goalie unaware es
he made the move expecting
Murray to pass rather than shoot.
With the Oower play pressing,
the Ironmen jumped into the lead
on a snappy three-way passing
play from Grahahn Hamilton at
one point to Rick Foxton at the
other point. Doug Leitch, at the
edge of the crease, tipped the
point shot into the corner of the
net at 18:31. Twenty-three
seconds later at 18:54 it was 5 to 3
for the Ironmen as Steve Ste.
Marie fed the puck to Murray
Black in the corner. Murray
slipped the puck into the slot to
Bob Johnston who blasted it into
the net. It was a real nice goal to
give the Ironmen a 5 to 3 lead at
the end of the second.
The third period lacked the
excitement of the second. as the
Ironmen played it with cautious,
defensive action, protecting their
two -goal lead. Port Elgin pressed
hard but just couldn't penetrate
the defensive wall of the Ironmen
and the sound goal -tending of
Benny Blackwell. Never a goal in
the third as the Ironmen
registered this 5 to. 3 win over
Port Elgin before an enthusiastic
home -town crowd.
WHISTLE STOPS—Slight
delay in getting game started due
to late arrival of referees. Not
sure whether they had overslept
or not but at times during the
game they appeared asleep atm.
switch. More than once they
found themselves forced to face
off at centre rectify an
erroneous whistle ... With the
ringing of a telephone one fan
was heard to shout "Hey ref, your
wife wants you on the phone" ... .
Port Elgin's Dave Carr caught
one of Graham Hamilton's blasts
from the point • on his leg and was
lost to his team for the night .. .
Doug Leitch led tlh Ironmen with
two goals ... The Ironmen threw
a well balanced team together in
this -one, no one going along for a
free ride. All three lines skated
well and time and time again it
was second effort by one or more
Ironmen that resulted in a goal
... Coach George went with three
defensive pairs and they all play-
ed sound, effective hockey .. .
Gord Lamont registered two
goals for Port Elgin and defense -
man Ron Sayle played a whale of
a game for them... And of course
the -fans got a special kick out of
Port Elgin's No. 4 George Scha-
matt, who truly resembles a big
hear, overstuffed and ready for
hibernation but a real fine solid
defenceman.
Winners of the Ironmen 5050
draw; first prize $175:00 Murray
Hill, Goderich; $10.00 winners,
Ron McKague, Teeswater and
Gordon Wall, Wingham
Noticed a number,of Fermi
players on hand cheeing for the
Ironmen. This win gives the
Fergus Green Machine still a
chance of over -taking the Port
Elgin team for that last playoff
spot.
Green machine downs Ironmen 9-6
The Fergus Green Machine
handed the Ironmen a 9-6 loss in
Junior D action in Fergus on Fri-
day night.
The starting whistle had no
sooner gone when an Ironmen
penalty threw the Fergus po er
play into gear and at 1:21 they
had an early lead on Steve
Harper's goal. At 3:04 Fergus
went two up as defenceman Scott
Marshall scored from the point.
The Ironmen came flying back
with two quick goals in 19
seconds, the first by Gerry
Wheeler at 6:34' with .assists to
Murray Black and Doug Leitch
and the second at 6:53 by Murray
,Black.
Fergus kept the pressure on
and with goals by Rick Lane and
Steve Harper held a 4-2, lead at
the end of the first.
Lucknow team
makes playoffs
WHITECHURCH — The Luck -
now PeeWee hockey team, of
which Richard Moore of this vil-
lage is a member, played at Mil-
verton Thursday evening, with a
score of 4-3 in favor of Lucknow.
On Friday evening, Milverton
came to Lucknow and the score
was 6-3 for Lucknow, advancing
them to the playoffs.
They began the playoffs
Monday evening when they,
played Teeswater and defeated
that team 6-4. The playoffs are
the best two out of three.
Second period action saw
Fergus completely dominate the
Olay, led by high scoring Gary
Kuntz who fired three goals and
Steve Harper picking up a single.
The Ironmen managed to find the
mark once, that a power play
goal by Murray Black. So at the
end of two periods the Green Ma-
chine was pulling away from the
' Ironmen with an 8-3 lead.
An early goal by Rick Lane., of
Fergus gave them a 9-3 lead. The
Ironmen kept skating and two
quick power plays, one by Gerry
Wheeler at 10:16 and the other by
Murray McKague at 11:26, made
it 9-5`for Fergus. But time was
running out and Murray Mc
Kague ,got{the final 'goal at 19:50
as the Ironmen wended their way
home on the short end of a 9-6
score.
- WHISTLE STOPS—Fergus, led
by three goals by Steve Harper
and Garry Kuntz, kept their
chances of making that fourth
and final playoff spot alive . .
Ironmen scoring came from the
sticks of three players as Gerry
Wheeler, Murray Black and
Murray McKague each had a
pair of goals ... It was a rough
game with Fergus picking up 5i
minutes in penalties and the Iron -
men drawing 38 minutes ... No
less than she power play goals in
this game, the Ironmen getting
four and Fergus two . . . Doug
Leitch saw little action in this one
as he uffered a bruised hip in the
first period . . . Coach George
Skinn was anything but happy
with the referees in this one and
only good luck kept George from

Atoms lose to
Mount Forest
The Wingham Atom hockey
team took it on the chin from the
Mount Forest crew on Thursday
of last week, to the tune of 6-1.
The boys played well for the
first two periods and held Mount
Forest to a 2-1 lead but the roof
fell in during the third period.
Daryl Holmes . scored Wing -
ham's lone goal, the assist going
to Robbie Strong.
The local lads start their play-
offs this week against Mitchell
and will be a team to be reckoned
with 'before it is all over for the
year as they played their last
three games of exhibition hockey
against a top team from Saltfleet
and came out with a two -goal
difference in the three games. If
they play close to the excellence
of those games they could just
walk away with it all.
Coach Dan Bellmore shuffled
his lines in an attempt to get them
ready for the playoffs, which
accounted for some of the dif-
ference in the scoring depart-
ment.
Wingham tops
Mount Forest
team 6 to 5
Thursday night saw the
Wingham PeeWee Colts defeat
the Mount Forest PeeWees by
one goal.
Mount- F-orest netted one in the
first period but Tom Remington,
who has become even more valu-
able on the defence, fired in two.
Leo Kinahan scored Wingham's
only marker in the second and
Mount Forest came back with
one, to make it 3-2 for the home
team.
Each team scored three in the
third period. Wingham's goals
going to Scott McGregor and
Paul Montgomery. Montgomery
got two, the second of which
proved to be the winner as the
final score of the game was 6-5 in
favor of the home team.
The next home game will be on
Friday, Feb. 7the at seven when
the Listowel PeeWees will be in
town to start the O.M.H.A. play-
