The Ministry of Transportation and Communications has recent- ly amended the regulations governing the operation of motorized snow vehicles in On- tario. The amendments cover such areas as registration, insurance, speed flimiis, reporting of collis- ions, wearing of helmets and ob- taining written permission from the land owner in order to drive on his property. The changes that will apply to the owners and operators of snowmobiles this season are: On the sale of a new vehicle the dealer must register the vehicle with the Ministry and pay the an- nual licence fee. (In the case of a machine used exclusively on the private property of the owner of the machine application may be made for a refund) ; As well as being prohibited A from driving on the roadway of a King's Highway you are now also prohibited from driving on the shoulder; Carrying of .proof of insurance is .now required when using pub- lic trails as well as on a highw y; If a snowmobile is involved in a collision on or off the highway .. . including private property . . . which res is in personal injury to any person or in damage to property including that of the owner of the snowmobile exceeds ing $100., the operator shall re- port the collision to the police as soon as possible; Speed limits have been set for the operation of motorized snow vehicles when being driven on a highway, upon any public trail, or in any public park or exhibition grounds; Under the new legislation, "public trail" is defined as any motorized snow vehicle trail es- tablished and maintained in assed whole or in part by public funds; Where the speed limit on a road is 30 miles per hour or less, no snow vehicle may be driven at a greater speed than 15 miles per hour. This speed limit applies in a y pubic park or exhibition grounds; If the highway speed limit is greater than 30 miles per hour., the maximum speed permitted for snow vehicle operation is 30 miles per hour. This is also the maximum speed permitted on any public trail; Municipal by-laws may vary speed limits provided signs are erected. Municipalities have the right to pass by-laws regulating, governing or prohibiting the operation of snowmobiles any- where within their boundaries, on or off the highway; The operator of a snowmobile driving on private property is re- quired to stop and give his cor- rect name and address at the re - quest of the owner or occupier of the property; The towing of a cutter, tobog- gan or sled is not permitted, on a roadway or shoulder except to cross at an angle of approximate- ly 90 degrees. Towing is not per- mitted anywhere except, by means of a rigid tow bar; Helmets must now be worn by all snowmobile operators, pas- sengers and persons being towed by a snowmobile, when on the roadway, shoulder or a public trail. Helmets must comply with standards established for motor- cycle helmets; All snowmobile operators must obtain written permission from the owner or occupier of land in order to drive on the property. Where an owner gives permission to a club, the permission extends to all members of the club. Tres- passing on private land while operating a snowmobile is an of- fence carrying a fine of up to $5.00. The new legislation. contains authority for additional control and regulation which will not come into effect until next sea. soca. These relate to identification of the vehicle as well as driver licensing and age limits. A furth- er announcement will be made on these subjects at a later date. Lakelet Mr. and Mrs. Warren Zurbrigg visited Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. John Freeman. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Demer- ling, Owen Wright and Miss Kim Hetzler spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Howie Wright in Montreal, Lakelet and Fordwich played Thursday night in the Howick Arena resulting .in a score of 6-2 in favor of Fordwich.
