In this day %adage, it is often tlifflettlt to find something funny in the news- paper. So, fOr light-hearted enter tainment and a few laughs, we .turn to the comic Section, commonly called the "funnies" - When we think Of the "fun- nies", we offEi go back in time to their heyday when Olondie and Dagwood were the stars and Walt Disney was always coming up with words of wisdom 'for the young fry. Then we graduated tO things like "The Wizard of Id" and "Broom -Hilda" which stars a characterwhosets his kicks by insulting others. One of the most lasting of all, though, and a longtime favorite of mine, has been Archie and his College pals. They are the symbol of eternal youth, perhaps in some' ways, a bit outdated for the -70s but still providing some of the sharpe,st wit and an -round good fun in the entire comic section of the newspaper. ' They were created by Bob Montana who has got to possess one of the keenest minds in the business. They have been on the go since 1942 which is more than 30 yeara and in an that time he has never run Out of material or jokes. Though he has not been doing the art work on coniic books, he has continued .writing the story lines and has been tdtally responsible for the news- paper strips. Last week Bob Montana died suddenly of a h6art attack while he was skiing in New Hampshire. He was 54 years old. His comedy will live on far a number of years; no doubt, but Archie is probably about to meet hia,. VVaterloo and disappear. Archie was first introduced as the cartoon's Henry Aldrich, based on that popular character from radio days. The other . characters, his swinging girl- friend Veronica, his dumb blonde girl -friend Betty and his arch rival Reggie, were people Mon- tana knew in school, as were many of the teachers and ,staff, members: •° Juguestr Velar sappy friend Who, in his stupidity provides some of the best lines of the strip, . was in Montana's imagination, but has become a very real friend of most of us who have followed his work through- out the years. The joy and freedom of youth has always been . depicted by Archie and his pals. Montana, at 54, has always remained young with them. When it comes their time to leave us, many of us will miss the gang that has brought us laughter for more than 30 years. Speaking of eternal youth, reminds me of the good old days in"the 50s when all the teenagers were going wild over the first big rock and roll stars. Remember Fabian? How about Frankie Ava- lon? The Beatles? And, of course, Elvis Presley? You feel young again when you hear their names mentioned -and listen again to the old songs and some new ones oa the radio or Benedict Arnold, AInericati officer who deserted to the British during the Revolution- ary War, • Was born in NOr- 1 Don t Send Up rnoke Ignals Place an ad in Crossroads for HEAP BIG RESULTS ONE AD IN CROSSROADS COVERSTHE CIRCULATION AREA OF THE LISTOWEL BANNER WINGHAM ADVANCE -TIMES and MOUNT FOREST CONFEDERATE BEFORE YOU BUY CARPET BEAR FACTS The average life expectan- cy of a bear in the wild is only five years while it can be up to 30 years in captivity, accord- ing to Lynn Rogers, Univer- sity of Minnesota graduate student in ecology.
