an UNDERHAND baseball pitcher,"

correct to say, "The team found it-

Performers -who were
preachers are rare
By NANCY ANDERSON
HOLLYWOOD — It's not so.
unusual to encounter a per-
former who used to be or al-
most was a teacher. Art Link -
letter and Dana Andrews are
teachers' college grads.
Mario Thomas has her
teacher's certificate., Dean
Stockwell used to teach full
time, and Robert Forster,
Shelby Grant Everett and the
late Dan Blocker were substi-
tute teachers.
But performers who were
preachers or very nearly so —
that's been another thing.
Recently, however;'ve
met two, and neither was
Marjoe Gortner.
The first of these, Jim
McKrell, host of "Celebrity
Sweepstakes," is a preacher's
son and an ex -Baptist preach- .
er himself who departed from
both his denomination and his
pulpit.
As far as denominations go,
Jim's now a Catholic, led to
the faith by his Carl clic wife
who, he says, seethed to be
getting more out of her con-
victions than he was getting
out of his. -
As far as his preaching
went, Jinn says that, although
he became an ordained Bap-
tist minister, he finally real-
ized
his ministry was mostly
an extension of his own ego, so
he gave it up.
McKrell was working for
RCA -Victor lin Texas handling
artist relations and record
promotion when he met Henry
Mancini who asked him what
his eventual goal might be.
When Jun. said it was act-
ing, Mancini encouraged him
to move to Los Angeles, and
less than three mo the later
made the move possible by
wing him a job.
In Los Angeles, at Man-
cini's further urging, the for-
mer preacher enrolled in a
drama workshop which pre-
pared him not only for the
hosting 'Celebrity Sweep-
stakes" but for television
commercial work, 13 weeks
on '`General, Hospital," a re-
curring role in "The F. B. I.,"
and a variety of television
guest shots.
Asked whether he'd like to
be a dramatic actor full time,
the "Celebrity Sweepstakes"
host happily answers, "I am
one."
Another perforier who's a
preacher's kid and who a1-
most made preaching his life
work is Clifton Davis, a star of
"That's My Mama," who was
within three days of becoming
a full-fledged minister when
he bolted and ran. However,
he's still deeply religious.
His father was a Baptist
preacher, but that wasn't the.
main reason Clifton, one of 14

decision to give his life to the

When he was nine years old

defect with w eh he could
live though only if he were
careful.
Clifton didn't take the ad-
monition very seriously and,
as a youngster, persistently
went out for various tean*s
which invariably rejected him
because of his heart condition.
"Later,"-- Davis remem-
bers, 1 was working at a
White Tower restaurant in
Philadelphia, and when I took
the physical examination re-
quired for food handlers the
doctor told me, 'You need a
heart operation.'
"I told hun I knew that.
"Then he told me that the
state of Pennsylvania would
pay for the surgery, so I de-
cided to have it done.
"After two months of explo-
ratory work, doctors told me
I'd have a 50+50 chance of sur-
viving the operation but that,
if 1 lived, I'd have a sound
heart.
"The operation took eight
and a half hours, and while I
was recovering I gave a lot of
thought to a lot of things."
Among the things Clifton
thought about was his rela-
tionship with God and his duty
to his Creator.
To his father's delight, he
decided he'd become a
preacher, and he did prepare
for the ministry, but three
days before he was to preach
his first sermon as a full-
fledged man of God in his fa-
ther's church, Davis realized
he'd made a mistake.

posed to. be a preacher," he -
