the local arena. on Sunday eve-
ning. -
The Ironmen struck e'ar'ly -,and
with Wiarton's Jim Schnitz pick-
ing
up a hooking: penalty at
the power play prlliteed a goal in
only 40 seconds as Barry Mac-
Donald flipped the puck back to
Barry O'Krafka just inside the
blueline and with a quick wrist
shot, high oh the stick side, the
Ironmen had a one goal lead.
The Ironmen carried the play
in the first and Wiarton was kept
in the game thanks to outstanding
goal -tending by R. Wolf. Wiar-
ton's strong checking crew
cashed in on a defensive miscue
by the Ironmen at 13:06 to even
the count.
It was an abbreviated first
period since the last two minutes
were added on, to the second
period when referee Bob Jones
took a hard shot on the leg and
went off on the limp.
When the teams hit the ice to
complete the second Wiarton took
the lead, thanks to poor clearing
by the Ironmen 'defence.
But the Ironmen came back
charging and at the nine second
mark evened the count on a goal
by Carl Stanley with assists going
to Rick Foxton and Barry Mac-
Donald. Then with the period less
than a minute old the Ironmen
had a 3-2 lead when Murray
Black .found the spot, linemates
Barry MacDonald and Carl Stan-
ley drawing assists. That finished
the scoring for the 'p

The third period saw lots 4f end
to end rushes with the Ironmen
attempting to protect t. eii' one
goal lead and like it or not the
strong skating, hard hitting
Wiarton team had them alnost
on the ropes time and time again
with only some big saves . Icy
goalie Paul Heffer keeping the
one goal lead.
Some of the fans started .' to
whisper in wondering if Wiarton
would pullttheir goalie as the end
of the game approached. Then~it
happened as quick as a flash A
mix-up as four Ironmen found
themselves in a six foot circle at
their blueline and the puck
squirted free to B. Rouse and, sent
him home free. Paul Heffer made
the initial stop and with ,no de-
fensive help was beaten on there -
bound as Wiarton* tied the game
at 17:22.
Hada sure win been plucked
from the Ironmen with that goal?
Well, some teams might have
settled f8r a tie, but not the Iron -
men. Especially hard working
Murray Black; He was the spark
that kept the -Ironmen moving all
night and he was the spark that
blasted home a perfect shot into
the upper left hand corner of the
net to. send the Wiarton boys
s winner
home en the, short end" of a 4-3
count. •
WHISTLE STOPS—Without a
doubt, th big stare of this game
was Murray Black. He's proving
that he can be inserted anywhere
in the line-up and come up with a
bang up game In this.one he was
inserted in the line with Barry
MacDonald and Carl Stanley and
they accounted for all four Iron -
men goals and Murray's winner
at 18:47 was a beauty ... This
was the best game of the season.
It had everything, good skating,
good passing and some clean
solid hits dished out by both
teams ... With lots of end to end
rushes- both goalies were kept
busy and came up with some big
saves. Wiarton's goalie had Iron -
men Graham Hamilton shaking
his head in disbelief As in the
midst of full splits with a last
second, lightning hand picked off
a quick blast to the lower corner
which had even loyal Ironmen
fans'clapping in appreciation of a
fine effort ... The referees kept
things moving and called a good
game. Hope that shot referee Bob
Jones took on the leg wasn't too
serious ... One bad injury as one
of the Wiarton defencemen
seemed to twist- an ankle rather
sharply and required` -stretcher
service to the hospital.
Next Sunday evening at 7:30
the Ironmen play host to the Port
Elgin Bears who are coming on
strong and as they just handed
those Arthur Eagles a 4-3 defeat,
they'll be up for this one and it
looks like another big game in
store at the local arena.
Ironmen down Atwood 8-3
Last Friday night the Ironmen
travelled to Milverton and racked
up a rather easy 8 to 3 win over
the Atwood Lions in Junior D
Action. •
.It took the Ironmen only 39
seconds to jump into the lead
when Doug Leitch dented the
twine with Murray McKague
drawing the lone assist. Atwood
evened the count as Richard
Broughton beat Ironmen goalie
Benny Blackwell at 15:16, -But a
minute later Gerry Wheeler shot
the Ironme n into a -1 lead with
defensive pair Barry O'Krafka
and Greg Hamilton drawing
assists.
The second period saw the
Ironmen get goals by Murray
Black, Bob Johnston, Graham
Hamilton and Steve Caslick with
Atwood's Bill pale picking up a
pair. The Ironmen had a com-
manding 6-3 lead after two,
periods,
Having only 13 players dressed,
Atwood tired in the third and
even though Ironmen penalties
gave their power play six,
chances they just didn't have;
enough bench strength. The Iron-„
men got an early and late goal
the period. Gerry Wheeler got the

seconds left in the period to bring
the Ironmen home with an easy 8

leen in this one, just not enough
players dressed ... The Ironmen
had all cylinders working and
nearly every player picked up at
least one scoring point in this win.
Bob Johnston led the Ironmen
with two goals and an assist with
Gerry Wheeler also picking up a
pair of goals ... Lots of penalties
in this one with the Ironmen pick-
ing up 14 of the 25 penalties
assessed . . . Remember, the
Ironmen play host to the Port ,
Elgin Bears this Sunday at 7:30
and -the Ironmen will be up for
this one as the Bears handed
them their one and only loss at
home in their last visit here. That
one loss is the only blemish on an
otherwise unbeaten record at
home for the Wingham team .. .
The Ironmen are on the move and
are unbeaten in their last nine
games. They'll be aiming to
make it 10 in this one ... Get Sun-
day Nite Ironmen Fever and join
the crowd at the local arena at
7:30.
Brownie Corner
After some games, Group I
continued the discussion of the
Canada Badge and others passed
the singing of "God Save the
Queen" and "0 Canada". A few
13rownies passed the test of their
knowledge of the Canadian flag.
Groups II and III learned more
letters of the manual alphabet
and played some games using the
manual alphabet.
In pow -wow, after singing a few
songs, the Brownies were en-
couraged to work on their
badges.
SUPER -SKATERS Blaine Moore and Carol Wheeler placed fourth in the OntarioliVinter
Games at Thunder Bay. Blaine, 14, and Carol, 13, have been skating for three arnt two
years, respectively, but have been together only since the summer. Both will also be skat-
ing in the gala "Circus on Ice" in Wingham on February T5th.
