TAKE A DEEP BREATH -Responding to an emergency call, the doctor took tocrto treat
a cow after she had given birth to a deaf calf. The cow could not stand up. A few injections
improved the cow's condition.
BREATHING ROOM—This and many other factors are what Dr. Van Dkjk looks for when
he checks a cystomer's chickens. Instead of just prescribing drugs all the time, the doctor
has suggested changes in living environment, such as more heating, better air circulation
and cleaner bedding.

said the feed price has doubled in
the last two or three years.
He explained that as of about
five years ago a quota system
was brought into Ontario, where
a board decides how many birds
may be sold per farm.
Dr. Van Dijk said that turkeys
require.. about 14 weeks of
growing time for maximum
"efficiency size". By letting the
birds live longer the price of
feeding them wouldn't justify
their extra size.
The Van Dijks plan on spending
the next\ few years in Shake-
speare building up their practice.
With Mrs. Van Dijk in the office
acting as secretary and book-
keeper, • Dr. Van Dijk is free to
roam the country looking after
southwestern Ontario's poultry.
• What motivated the couple is as
apparent as the words framed
and hung on Dr. Van Dijk's office
wall: "The Future is as bright as
the Promises of God".
many poultry veterinarians," he
said.
So he decided to settle in south-
western Ontario.
The Van Dijks now live in a
modest home in Shakespeare
which is about seven miles east of
Stratford. He has converted a
garage into a laboratory where
he performs poultry post-mor-
tems or any other laboratory
procedure necessary.
In addition, he said, he is one of
the few veterinarians left who
will make calls to the farm. He
does this in a van that was con-
verted into a kind of travelling la-
boratory with his instruments
and medicines right in the van.
"Eventually I just want to spe-
cialize in poultry. As it stands
now, I take care of all farm ani-
mals.
"I know more about poultry
than any regular veterinarian
does." he said.
He explained that if a poultry
farmer loses a few birds every
day of a flock of 30,000 there is no
need to worry. The expected loss
is one per cent.
"But if he loses, say 300 or 400
in a few days, something is
wrong.',
Normally, he said, a vet will
take about five dead birds and
some sick ones and perform ,a

TREND TO CRAFTS
Craft kits' are increasingly
popular gifts for children, reports
Consumers' Association of Cana-
da. But avoid disappointment by
reading the small print to see
whether enough material is in-
cluded to make all or only one of
the pictured items. Read care-
fully the manufacturer's instruc-
tions for completing the kit to de-
termine whether it is suited to
. your child's age and ability. Craft
kits which recommend parental
superivision are best suited for
the over 10 group.
