Christmas - a time for wishing
When Christ was born in Bethlehem al-
most 2,000 years ago only a few people
glimpsed the, truth that mankind had
reached the great turning -point of the ages
... that humans were offered the opportu-
nity to free themselves from eons of super-
stition, fear and cruelty..
Although Christ's followers grew in
numbers through succeeding centuries and
marked their belief with vaulted cathedrals,
they were slow indeed to put into practice
those ways of• life the Saviour died to em-
phasize.
Yet -the anniversary of His birth .still
calls us back to the truth that God and man
are meant to be partners in the long, difficult

is a time for wishing we could make our
whole world the kind of dwelling place the
Creator. intended it to be.
Wishing that we could do something
more practical about starving children in
Africa and India . : . wishing that the power
of nuclear energy could be used to alleviate

ing we had taken a little more time to say,
things like "I was wrong"; "I hope you're
feeling better" or "What can' I do to help?"
Wishing we had taken more time with our
children so our families would be closely knit
by love and understanding. Wishing we had
loved enough to discipline our young ones
properly in preparation for a life which
cannot be lived withoutoself-discipline.

The Three Wise men would never recognize the Star of Bethle-
hem this Christmas.
But it's there, in plain sight — though now fragmented into the
planets Jupiter, Saturn, Mars, and Venus. A popular astronomi-
cal theory is that two or more of these planets appeared to come
together in the heavens so that they looked like a single star to
the Three Kings. Astronomers offer this explanation ---among
others — in the assumption that the Star of Bethlehem was in fact
a genuine celestial object.
Some Biblical scholars, how-
ever, argue that when the Three
Wise Men talked about a star,
they were actually using the
word in an allegorical descrip-
tion of a spiritual experience.
St. Matthew described in the
Gospel how • a star guided the
Magi to the Christ child in Beth-
lehem: "And behold the star
which they had seen in the east,
went before them until it came
and stood over where the child
was. And seeing the star they re-
joiced with exceeding joy."
Astronomers say that the star
was really a conjunction or ap-
parent coming -together of sev-
eral planets. They point out that,
due to changes in the calendar
since then, the birth , of Christ
was really about 7 or 6 B.C. ..
Other explanations — that the
Star of Bethlehem might have
been a supernova or exploding
star, or that it was an exception-
ally bright meteor — are dis-
counted because none of the
many professional stargazing as-
trologers of the time mentioned
any such observance.
Christmas Season
Folklore Time
Christmas legends and Christ-
mas folklore is fascinating wheth-
er true or not. There are innum-
erable tales that form the tradi-
• tions of the holiday season.
• Animals are prominently men-
tioned in many legends and cus-
toms. One Christmas legend tells
of the little gray lamb with a
longing heart to be white. It
wandered to the dwelling of the
Holy Family, lingering at the
door. The Christ Child, seeing
the lamb, beckoned it in. He laid
his hand on its head, and it be-
came white as snow.
Swedes Norwegians, and the
Swiss make it a special point to
be extremely friendly and hos-
pitable on Christmas, both to
domestic pets and wild birds.
A persistent Christmas legend
Is that bees hum a carol in hon-
or of the Christ Child. In En-,
gland, holly is placed on the hive
to wish the bees a Merry Christ-
mas.
