is SPS Theme
WHITECHURCH — The Young
People's Society met Sunday eve-
ning in the Langside church with
president Cecil deBoer in charge.
The scripture was read by Barry
Elliott who also gave the topic,
"Christian Love". Adiscussion
followed on the topic.
Arrangements were made for
members of the group to help at
the Langside community concert.
There were 14 young people in
attendance.
CORRECTION
The report in our last issue of
the . road figures for the 1974
budget of $98,750 announced at
the Hawick ratepayers' candi-
dates'
andidates' meeting was incorrect.
Road expenditures to date are
$131,810,51. The budget allows for
$138,300.
The 1973 budget • was
$138,097.97. Both this year `and
last year's .road budgets have
comedown from the previous two
years. The 1972 budget was $152,-
676.02
152;676.02 while in 1971 expenditure
on roads came to $182,131.94.
'Hs Day" theme
fer UCW meeting
FORBWICH = The general
meeting of the United Church
Women had .a Christmas theme
when it was held in the Sunday
School room on Thursday after-
noon. The room took on a festive
air with a lighted Christmas tree,.
baskets of red and white mums
and on the worship centre the
nativity scene and figures.
Mrs. Wray Cooper used the
theme, "It Is His Day". Mrs. Zur-
brigg read passages of scripture
from Isaiah and Luke II. These
were interspersed with the sing-
ing of Christmas carols. Mrs.
Jack Wilson sang a solo, "Jesus
Was Born in Bethlehem". A
meditation on "It Is His Day"
was given by Mrs. Zurbrigg. Mrs.
Cooper read a Christmas story,
"Truce in the Forest", telling of
an unusual Christmas on the
Western- Front in World War II.
Mrs. Scott Clarkson, president
of the UCW, presided for the
business period. The roll call was
answered with "Christmas
Thoughts". Mrs. Robert Kelley
read the report of the nominating
committee with the new slate of
officers proposed for 1975.
Miss M. McElwain gave a
treasurer's report and $100 was
voted to the "Over and Above"
gifts of the UCW Mission and
Service Fund, A donation of
$1,000 was voted to the men of the
church for current expenses.
Mrs. Harold Doig and Mrs. Wil-
liam Wilson were named as a
committee to choose Christmas
remembrances for the shutins.

chener spent a few days last week
with her grandparents, Mr. and
Mrs. Lorne Jamieson.
Mr. and Mrs. Gibson Arm-
strong visited on Sunday with her
father, Herson Irwin, and her
mother, Mrs. Irwin who is a
patient in Wingham and District
Hospital. They also visited with
his mother, Mrs. Mary Arm-
strong, a patient in Wingham and
District Hospital.
