the world Is illi about. °
1 took a rather different line. I
told them that being an honorstu-

Either you are born With some in-
telligence, inwhich case you can
walk through our acbool system,
or you are .born to a mother or

In either case, it was an accident,

Both my kI were honor stu-
dents, in Grade g. And the boy
could almost,tie his own shoe-
laces when he was 14, and the girl
was still knocking over her glass
of milk at table when she was 14.
From Grade t they went straight
downhill. But rin not too worded
about them. They both have a'
sense of honor, and that's a lot
more important to me, than
honor standing in school.
Some of the rottenest people,
physically, morally and emo-
tionally, whom I have ever met,
have been honor students. With
no sense of honor.
I was au honor student too,
once, in Grade 8. Tins was back

hand, you have ,proved that you
are not a du ►y.. I've' been
running a comfortable third ever
since.
1 was the third member in our
fanny of five. It was rather
pleasant. ' I didn't have to coin-
pete with.` my older brother and
sister, and 1 could bully my
youngerbrother, and Sister.
When it time to take our lumps
in the war, 1 still Iran a com-
fortable third. My older brother
chose to have himself 'blown up,
rather spectacularly: Myyoung
brother, in a desperate attempt to
get some recognition, wona
decoration for bravery,, f after
being shot down in the English
Channel. (1 don't see what's so
brave about that.) I went quietly
off to a prison camp, and
eneerged with three ` thousand
do rs in back pay. They were
both broke.
There's nothing wrong with
being a third-place runner. I
don't mind getting a little mud in
my face, as long as 1finish in the
money.
Now let's be serious for a
moment. I'd like to take a closer
look at the word "honor". It's one
of those abstract words that you
hear less and less these days, as
though it were embarrassing to
utter them. Words like com-
passion and virtue and chastity
and loyalty and decency. People
almost blush when they use one of
them..It seems.that,weall, have tor

cept' our young people, who are
not afraid to talk of lov¢ and com-
passion and tolerance and kind-
ness and pity.
They see only too clearly
through the "plastic" world they
have been bequeathed: a world of
false values, lip service to ideals,
abd violence.
No wonder there is a genera-
tion gap. We worship the golden
calf, and are flabbergasted when
our: kids see it for what it is: a
gri ven image.
We want to sweep everything
under the rug, so the neighbors
won't see it. We want our kids to
be "nice", and "sensible", and
"solid", while they see the joy
and the pain that is real human
life.
These are some of the thoughts
I shared with the students. In
closing, I suggested, "Don't just
be an honor student. Be an honor
person."
Do you agree?
Japanese pottery's
tradition of excellence
The golden age of Japanese
pottery began in the 16th Cen-
tury and today Japan enjoys a
worldwide reputation not only
on the artistic level of the
ceramic art but also in terms
of utensils for daily use.
The pottery industry pro-
duces annually over $472 mil-
lion worth of goods in some
4,500 factories with more than
8,000 kilns.
Botulism is a
puzzling killer
Scientists aren't sure why
botulin is as toxic as it is. One
group confessed they couldn't
establish a toxicity -to -weight
ratio for botulin — in other
words they couldn't name a
small enough quantity of the
poison that wouldn't be likely
to kill the biggest man.
Type A botulism kills about
70 per cent of the time, attack-
ing nerve centers controlling
the muscles of the eyes, throat
and lungs. Death is usually
brought on by respiratory
failure.

In other words youare of
those customers cooly the
bare minimum of electricity; you
have to pay over "three: times the
rate given the 'mein. who uses a
greir deal' of H.. N ' lee
whsit hisreally`' ne' s. Here ve
are faced with an this
which threatens to change. our
very way of life i less we ':fid
some feasible way to come to
grips with. it. And our govern-
ments are spending .a lot of time
and money trying to preach the
gospel of conservation to us. We
are repeatedly asked to turn off
as many lights as we can, to use
bulbs of lower wattage, to do
without that air conditioner, and
if we heat with electricity,to turn
the thermostat down a few
degrees.
Yet here on the back of every
bill you have irrefutable proof
that the governments who own
those hydro companies can.'t,
really mean what'theyare saying
•
at all. Because they are still
giving us drastically cut rates for
every erg of extra electrical
energy which we find a way to
use.
Seems to me that this policy is
not only inconsistent with whatis
supposed to be the current
government policy of urging us to
use less, but that it is cruelly
unfair as well. What it means is
that the pensioner who lives in
two rooms, each with a single
naked bulb hanging from the
ceiling and who cooks his pot of
stew on a two -burner hotplate,
has to pay three times as much
per unit of power as does the
millionaire who has a heated
swimming pool and every electri-
cal gadget that money can buy.
So whether you are dealing
with a liiblic utility or the most
grasping of private enterprises, it
seems to be the same old story.
And the moral of that story is that
it costs money to be podr.
