Mrs. Lorna Douglas elected
president of Wingham group
Mrs. Lorna Douglas was
elected president of the Wingham
and District Association for the
Mentally Retarded when its
November meeting was held in
the classroom of the Golden
Circle School on Monday evening.
The new executive was presented
by the nominating committee,
Mrs. Donna VanderWoude Bill
Millen and Harvey Webster.

Jamieson reported that the
YACMR girls are busy working
on a float for the Santa Claus
parade which will take place in
Wingham on Saturday, Decem-
ber 7.
The next executive meeting
Will take place on Monday even-
ing, January 13. The Association
meetings will take place on the
fourth Monday of each month, the
next one to be held on January 27.
After the meeting was closed,
coffee and cookies were enjoyed
by everyone.

Citizenship and World Affairs . ,
was the theme of the regular

of the Women's' Institute held in
the council chamber on Thurs-
day, November 21.
The meeting was opened by the
president, Mrs. Holmes, at 2:30
p.m. with the Opening Ode, Mary
Stewart Collect and the singing of
"0 Canada". The secretary-
treasurerread the minutes of the
previous meeting, also the
correspondence.
It was decided that boxes of
Christmas treats will be
presented to past members who
are residing at the Brookhaven
Nursing Home. A Christmas gift
of money will be given to the two
caretakers of the Town Hall.
Plans were made for the
Christmas banquet which is
being held at the United Church,
also for an invited euchre to be
held on Friday, January 3. Mrs.
Mary Armstrong was appointed
delegate to the London area
convention which is being held at
Stratford on November 27 and 28.
The roll call was answered by
naming a province, its premier
and its emblematic flower.
Pictures were shown of many of
these emblems. The motto,
"When you stop listening, you
stop learning", was given by
Mrs. Bradburn.
The conveners of the Citizen-
ship and World Affairs com-
mittee, Mrs. Bradburn and Mrs.
Mackenzie, were in charge of the
program. Miss Williamson read
an interesting paper on the

. Bradburn gave an in-
spiring talk on citizenship and
played two selections, on the
mouth organ.
The meeting closed with the
Queen and the Institute Grace.
The hostesses, Mrs. Haselgrove,
Mrs. Sewers, Mrs. Foxton and
Mrs. Newman, served lunch.
Belgrave
Mr. and Mrs. Alex Styles of
Toronto spent the weekend with
their aunt, Mrs. Cora McGill and
also visited with Mrs. Norman
Geddes of Goderich.
Mr. and Mrs. Allan Lechinsky
and Stephen of Regina, Sask., are
visiting with her mother, Mrs.
George Cook and other relatives
in the area.
Mr. and Mrs. Willard Arm-
strong visited on the weekend
with Mr. and Mrs. David Hanna

Grainger and Mrs. Wilbur Hogg.

Prime lending
rate drops
to 11 per cent
If you are a customer at either
the Toronto -Dominion Bank or
the Canadian Imperial Bank of
Commerce it is going to cost you
less to borrow money.
A press release from the public
relations department of they
Toronto -Dominion Bank an-
nounced that effective November
19, the bank's prime lending rate
was reduced to 11 per cent from
111/2 per cent. However, for
holders of premium savings
accounts there will be a drop in
interest rates as well. The bank
has knocked that interest rate
down to 83/4 per cent from 9% per
cent effective on December 1.
The T -D will also lower the
base interest rate for small busi-
ness loans from 101 per cent to
101/4 per cent.
Doug Bishop, manager of the
Wingham branch of the Canadian
Imperial Bank of Commerce, told
the Advance -Times in a tele-
phone interview that his bank will
be following suit in reducing
their lending rates.
Spokesman in the financial
field have attributed the rate re-
ductions in Canadian banks to
general reduction rates in the
international financial com-
munity and a reduction of the
Bank of Canada's rate last week
from 9% to 83/4 per cent.
