A British Columbia professor of
business administration James
D. Forbes has been doing . some
ponderous pondering about the
cost of food for the Canadian Con-
sumer Council, and the findings
of his research were made public
a few days ago. And since your
tax dollar and mine went to pay
the Professor, it seems only fair.
that we discover what scholarly
advice we got for our money.
"Policies which try to produce
higher incomes for the farmer
are a mistake," he says. "When
farm income increases so does
the price of land and farm costs
of all kinds. The answer is for the
smaller farmer to move off the
land and let the bigger, more effi-
cient operators take over."
The Tact thit such an •£xodus
has been going on for years and
that the farm population is now
only , 6 per cent of the whole
doesn't seem to trouble the pro-
fessor's theory, and he insists
that if agriculture were more
completely in the hands of the big
boys, they would produce so ef-
ficiently that they would •require
neither subsidies nor marketing
boards to keep prices reasonable.
And where would the little
farmer go when he left his land?
Well Prof. Forbes obviously feels
that he wasn't paid to discuss that
aspect of the problem. All he says
is that social assistance will be
required to help him make the
change. Which would seem to
mean that instead of occasionally
subsidizing his production, the
government would now be
obliged to subsidize 'his non -pro -
duction.
Which leaves just one question
for the learned professor before
he dedicates his genius to his next
research effort. If he's' really
convinced that the fewer the
farmers the higher the efficiency,
would he suggest perhaps that all
agriculture be given into the con-
trol of a very few super corpora-
tions? Why not a big three in
farming, professor, so that the
price of butter and beefsteak can
be held in check the same as the
big three in motors have held
down the price of new cars, and
the big three in sugar have held
down The price of. their item and
the few big super dooper bakeries
have held down the price of
bread?
By coincidence the news
coverage of Prof. Forbes'
solution to'•the problem of farm
prices hit the front page the same
week that our M.P.'s began to
talk of raising their salaries
again, and Montreal's subway
men got their salaries indexed to
the cost of living. Also that week
the city -of San Francisco agreed
to pay their street sweepers

Not every villain on television has a kind side. But Relic, of CBC
television's Beachcombers series, seen each Sunday at 7 p.m.,
definitely has one, even though he doesn't know what to do
with it most of the time. Relic, played by veteran Vancouver
actor Robert Clothier, lives in an old, broken•down houseboat
Clbsons, B.C., where he does his own cooking and washing,
latter not very' often.
