If you do go to term with an IUD, the baby is unaffected. Q. I never had cramps with my menstrual periods until I got an IUD. Why do I have them now? Should I have the IUD removed? A. You have menstrual cramps now with your IUD because your uterus is trying to expel it. For this reason, you should check your IUD strings after your period to be sure it has not been expelled into the vagina, or lost all to- gether. If you can, a good hab- it to get into is to estimate the length of your strings (or string) and note any changes. If they are nOticeably longer, the IUD probably has moved down tnto the cervix. One test of pregnancy is a gradual shortening and disappearance of the strings as the uterus grows. However, there are other signs arknymptoms of prepancy that would alert you before you noticed much change in the strings. If your cramps disable you, or, if they are accompanied by heavy bleeding .that wears you dowrt, removal and use of another type of contraceptive are worth considering. Q. I have had my IUD for almost two years now. Do I have to worry about getting pregnant with it since I've had it this long? A. The chances of getting pregnant with an IUD are less the longer you have it. There is still a small incidence of pregnancy. Exactly what it is depends upon the type of IUD you are wearing. Any medical procedure is tested in several different parts of the country, and in other countries, and statistics 'will vary a little because women and methods will vary. The overall picture with all the IUDs is that pregnancy occurs oftener in the first three Months of use.
