The boys claim that if they had had their usual team the Exeter club would have been at the foot of thescore. Clinton New Era. -If by havingtheir usual team in the field, the Clinton' team would have beaten Exeter, we must infer from the wide difference in the score that the ability of the Clinton team is centered in a couple of players, as we are told only .two of their regular men were absent. Haw - ever we think the Clinton team is incapable of defeating Exeter in a match of cricket. On Thursday of last week, while young Mr. Leary, of the 4th con., McGillivray, was harvesting, one of the horses kicked over the tongue and fell, Miss Leary seeing the accident went to his assistance, and unhitched part of the tugs. Sudden- ly the horse rose and plunged forward, the reels striking Miss Leary on the head, knocked her down, the sharp point of the guard inflicting a large wound enherleg. Miss Leary got up and tried to escape, but was hit four or five `-'tidies and knocked down, while the knife was within an inch of her person. Ultimately the horse was quieted, and Miss Leary escaped. Surgical aid was summoned and the wounds dressed, Miss Leary is doing well. Her escape was miraculous. It is an easy natter to find fault with the conduct municipal of affairs, and those entrusted with their charge generally have a thankless job, but it would not be un • - gracious here to express disapproval at the neglect shown in allowing the condition of sidewalk fronting Mr Jas.' Pickard's to re- main so deplorable as it has been for some time: While along the remainder of Main street good walks are erected, it seems strange that the stretch in question is allowed to remain unnoticed. The boards are uneven, loose and much worn and to pedestrians the walking over, this stretch fs rendered •very unpleasant., We would. recommend that a new walk bs placed, en' front of Mr. Jas. Pickard's ro'idence. • A convention of the merchants of the 'Province was held at Hamilton last week for the discussion to trade matters in. general, more particularly the odious question of bankrupt stocks and the peddling system of trading. Messrs. T. 13. Carling, of Carling Bros., and James Parkinson, represented Exeter, both of whom made telling speeches against the various drawbacks and nnsiances to the success of the more stable merchants. How The Girls Kiss. i ' The Grand Bend girl bows her stately head • And she fixes her stylish lips In a firm, hard way, and lets them go, In opasmodie little snips. The Zurich girl removeth her specs, And freezeth her mouth with a smile ; Then sticks out her lips like an open book And cheweth her wax meanwhile. The Hensall girl says never a word, And you'd think she was rather tame With her practical views of the matter in hand, But she gete there just the same. The Luev.n girl the pride of the South, Absorbs in all with a yearning yearn, As hie as a ton of hay. The Crediton girl gets a grip on herself, Att she carefully takes off her hat, And she grabs up her prize in a frightened way, Like a terrier shaking a rat. The Kippen girl, so gentle and. sweet, Lets her lips meet the coming kiss, With rapturous warmth, and the youthful soul Floats away on a sea of bliss. The Centralia girl, a creature divine, Whether wife, or widow, or miss, Looks into your eyes with starlit orbs And puts her soul in her kiss The Woodham girl is It church going miss Yet she'd give you one on the sly, And softly and gently press her lips, That are sweet as apple pie. . The Elimville girl will sometimes refuse, to have you insist and plead, But when she finally does consent, Her aiss is a kiss indeed. The Dashwood girl shuts her dreamy eyes When asked to osculate, And lets the vandals steal the kiss, Which she really likes first rate. The Staffa girl neither sighs nor pines Nor acts in a manner rude, But goes about kissing in a businesslike way, That catches the average dude. The Devon girl gets the man's moustache Vi7itn a grip an tight as glue, Then opening a little. her ruby lips Pulls the kiss on like a shoe. The Rodgerville girl who kisses her beau, Knows exactly what she's a.bout, And the nectar sipped from her ruby lips Is sweetest long drawn out. The Exeter girl she beats them all But how I'll not explain, Because if I did the rush would be great And I want to get there again. J. 13. A* Graduate Trinity University, Tor- onto ; Fel. Trin.
