Show Biz
Eleven o'clock in the morning
and all is not well! You have had
a lousy day! The kids have been
impossible, grouchy husband
blamed you for losing one of his
socks, the toaster went on the
fritz and burned the toast, the dog
got into the garbage and you just
broke your favorite cup, a gift
from Grandma! Solutions? Make
yourself a cup of coffee to soothe
your nerves, throw out the
toaster, tie up the dog and lock
your kids in the den with the
roaring flashing boob toob!
But wait! Do you ever stop to
think just how much that boob
toob is damaging your children?
The average child watches hun-
dreds of hours of television in one
week and what he watches is not
always what he should be wat-
ching.
Writer Michele Landsberg re-
cently, completed a survey for
Chatelaine magazine, wherein
she spent time in front of the
television during the hours many
children are glued to the set. She
came away with some definite
ideas about what your child
should or should not be watching.
Though Ms. Landsberg is defi-
nitely a Women's Libber and re-
sents the exploitation or degra-
dation of woman's tole in many of
the series on Canadian television,
she makes some good points,
some Of which I would like to pass
on.
Just how much does television
affect the mind of your child?
Many psychologists thinkgreat
demi. It is difficult for a gild to
distinguish between the real
by Vonni Lee
world and the make-believe
world of television. To the young-
ster, every dramatization has
happened, every dead man stays
dead, every act of violence be-
comes welded in the little mind
and influences his thinking. As
Ms. Landsberg quotes in her
story, "Canadian psychologists
are reporting a startling rise in
nursery school kung fu attacks
with some youngsters actually
being knocked unconscious."
Don't argue that you only let
your children watch 'a little bit'
of such stuff. It takes only
minutes to influence him in his
thinking and form his impres-
sion. After all, if the big hero on

can't we all?
Listed among the ten best
shows you can let your children
watch, from the public networks,
CBC and WNED-TV, are "Sesa-
me Street", not so much the U.S.
production but the Canadian seg-
ments which "are great identity -
builders for Canadian kids";
"The Beachcombers", a Sunday
evening series starring Bruno
Gerussi, a "top adventure series
with which :children can identi-
fy"; "Friendly Giant", described
as "simple and low-keyed"; "Mr.
Dressup", "the most sensitive,
creative, play -stimulating pro-,
gram for pre-schoolers";
"Zoom", a series for children, by
children, with "no grownups in
sight"; "Vision On", a 'British -
produced series originally meant
for - deaf children; "Polka Dot
Door", patterned after another
BBC production, "designed to
stimulate the imaginations and
minds of toddlers"; "The Wal -
tons", Sunday evening's series
for the whole family, cited be-
cause it is about "a family whose
members respect each other";
"Children's Cinema", interna-
tional films made especially for
children; and "Audubon Wildlife
Theatre", bringing children into
contact with the wild world and
teaching them to have concern
for the ecology.
With all of these, though, the
writer urges parents to take the
time to sit and watch the shows
with their children, to explain
and discuss what the child cannot
understand and talk maturely
about the production.
Ms. Landsberg then continues
to list some shows she thinks your
kids are best not to watch. They
include Bugs Bunny, the superb
ti's " _•,-• •*• .-wov.+a .:W.+f".w•..,..... . .rG
animation often covering up
things, the child cannot.. under
stand, the Road Runner seg-.
rents being much too violent and
making the child: believe it is fine
to clobber someone if he' bas
wronged you; "I Dream of Jean-
nie'', the idea of "female ',.laves"
definitely misleading and wrong;
"The Brady Bunch", where boys.
are pitted against girls in a two-
family situation comedy;
"MASH", a series which depends
on "sadistic humor" and is .al-
ways degrading women; "Super -
friends", a cartoon featuring
Superman, Wonderwoman, Bat-
man and Aquaman, and in the re-
viewer's words, "American
brainwashing for Canadian
kids"; "Romper Room", des-
cribed as "stilted, a' super cheap
economy item for local stations".
She mentions others in this list,
among them "Gilligan's Island"
but to me a surprise, she doe; not
rate "All in the Family",
"Maude" or "Hogan's Heroes" in
this category. Don't know about
you but I would rather see a kid
hammering the daylights out of
the walnut coffee table than have
them watching "All in the
Family" or "Maude". Them's
my sentiments, anyhoo! !
However you look at it, whether
you think of eye damage or mind
damage, television is not the
thing to let your child be doing
five or six hours of every day. No
matter how you waist a moment's
peace from them, be careful
about their choice of entertain-
ment; it will influence them more
than you can imagine. And when-
ever you can, share their televi-
sion • viewing; if it does nothing
else, it will give 2,you a clue as to
what your kids like to watch and
warn you about what they
shouldn't watch.
