year and in 1975..
During the opening cere-
monies, emceed by John gent,
both MP'P Gaunt and Bud Bitton
of Hanover, representing the
sports and recreation branch of
the Ministry of Community and
Social Services, paid tribute to
the courage of the township in
undertaking such a project at this
time.
"This complex has taken a tre-
mendous community effort," Mt
Bitton, formerly of Listowel,
said. "But you're not done yet
and you know it ... And I know
the people of Howick will make a
go of it as far as this centre is
concerned. Nothing like this
could happen in Peterborough or
in Toronto. It could only happen
in a place like this and you are
much the better for it."
The building of the centre
through local effort, MPP Gaunt
said, reminded him of the old
saying, "Never stand begging for
that which you can earn."
"And this • community has
earned this community centre;
you have earned it and you
deserve it," he said. "The com-
munity spirit of Howick is the
spark that set fire to this project
... and it is this kind of project
that draws a community to-
gether."
