"In the business of people"
by
Douglas Hall
is The motto.of the world-famous
Peoples Church, Toronto, may be
"the church that puts • foreign
missions first" but, as far as its
.minister, Dr. Paul B. Smith, is
concerned it: is in the business of
people.
"If we run out of people, we're
out of business," he says,
It is this philosophy that
prompted Dr. Smith,,to move his .,
church from its downtown
Toronto location to the Borough
of North York shortly after taking
over the pulpit .from his father
and founder Dr. Oswald J, Smith..
"Irealized. that there was'a big
,:bane takking, place in Toronto
Ibecameqminister m• 1959,"
a'it. aSmitb flog` uf'arre `'
codples : ° with ` families were
mowing to the suburbs and it
didn't take a genius to see the
warnings that said, 'move with
them or die' ".
It was. a calculated, risk,
because it meant losing ;some of
the established mernbes who,
for one reason or another, would
not move with the church. Risk or
not Dr. Smith took it and has
never looked back since October
28, 1962, when the multi-million
dollar Peoples Church opened its
doors for the first Sunday service
at the new location.
Since then, The Peoples Church
has built its congregation up to
well over 2,000 for every Sunday
service. It is not uncommon for
the church to be packed, out week
nights for such programs as the

1,500. Most of the pupils are
actively engaged in other church
organizations such as junior
choir, musical groups, Christian
Service Brigade, Pioneer 'Girls or
the 200 -acre Peoples Ranch at
Milton, Ontario. Well over 500
boys or girls spent part or the ,
whole of their summer vacation
at the ranch either as campers or
on the staff. The ranch is laid out
like a western town and provides
'most sports, plus riding, over-
night trail rides and rodeos.
Concerned about the agnostic
and atheistic teachings.: in the
public and secondary school
system, Dr. Smith formed The
Peoples Christian School in 1971.
Prophets of doom.. predicted that
itWould enjoy a short life but like,
N .
most of Paul B.Sr , tojecti,
it flourished. This year nearly 500
students are registered in classes
running from pre -kindergarten to
Grade li. The standards are
high, the teachers competent and
the. students enthusiastic.
The most recent innovation for
The Peoples Church Is the
telecasting of the Sunday'morn-
ing _ service (it seen on -CJX-
TV every Sunday 12 to 1 pin.).
Beginning the first Sunday in
January, 1973, it quickly built a
faithful audience until it became
the highest-rated religious slum
on Canadian television.
Not content to carve out a
Canadian audience, Dr. Smith
moved south of the boarder and is
now seen weekly on stations in
Indiana and Illinois. American
viewers were taken by surprise:
because they are conditioned to
t their rogranus suclxas
invade Canada, not the reverse.
