Buford Pusser's claim to fame was as a sheriff, in McNairy County, Tennessee. And what, you ask, 'does a sheriff have to do• with show business? Well, not a great deal, except that someone thought that Buford's story would make a good movie. It did. "Walking Tall" was hailed as one of the finest pictures of last year. The story one man's fight against corrup- • tion in a small town, it was relatively close to the man's life and he came across as one of the most- real and human guys to ever be portrayed on the screen. The respect you felt for this. guy couldn't be measured and you came away feeling proud of men like him and guilty that all of us are too much like all the others in the movie who closed their eyds. to what was going on around them. ' Buford Pusser, six feet . six • inches and 250 pounds of man, was a wrestler but after three years in the business, he came home to settle down to a quiet peaceful life. However, he could not sit idly by and watch the town go to ruin antecondone the illegal happenings that were making his home a haven for organized crime. At first an involved r citizen, then as the sheriff of the county (a position earned with a great deal of difficulty), Buford fought to clean up the place. On a beautiful morning'in 1967, Buford received a phone call, a tip that a new still was starting operations. As he started out to investigate, he decided it would be nice if his young wife Pauline would come along 'for the ride'. It', was to be their last ride. The `tip'. was a hoax and on the way, they were ambused by gunmen. Pauline was left dying on the roadside and Buford was rushed to Memphis Baptist Hospital with a shattered jaw. The real story, unlike that of the movie, ended with town people finally' taking hold of things and finding their consciences, too late to help Pauline, but at least cleaning things up for Buford as he lay in critical condition in hospital the night of the ambush. He won his case but at a high cost. Though he greatly regretted the death of his wife and never remarried, Buford always said he would do the same thing again. And if no one had the courage to 'walk tall' like Buford, where would we be? His two young `children were taken to live with their grandparents; his son is now 10 and his daughter 11 He has undergone 15 plastic surgery operations since the 1967 shoot- ing. e • et'• I, 4+, Buford's close calf es with' death couidkl be numbered, but he always came out on top — until last week when he' died in a car accident about 100. miles from Memphis. At 36, the Big Man• no longer `walks tall' but what an examplehe left for his family and for all of us. At the time,of his death, he was making plans for a sequel to "Walking Tall" and though he acted as technical consultant on that movie (his role was played by Joe Don Baker), he was going to portray himself in the sequel. The movie will no doubt still be made, without him, for he was an American hero in every sense of the word: It is a shame, with all his conquests of right over wrong, , that he fell victim to highway slaughter; a form of murder over which we seem to exercise such little concern or control. 0-0-0 From Tennessee back to Ontario and another guest ap- pearance coming up for our local artist Don Vair who will be talking about his paintings, no doubt specifically his barnboard THRUM -$.4 SPILLS •at, ARNEY SPEE No. 6 highway 3 miles south of Durham `*Featuring the a Limited Late Models competing for THE itED CAP AWARDS *Superchargers plu. 4 Chargers competing for THE PEPSI AWARDS EVERY SUNDAY 7:00 P.M.
