Established in 1972 bY James Murphy and members of Toronto Gate Productions, it is a new venture in theatre in this area. Grand Bend was a wise choice for the Playhouse. Situated as it is on Lake Huron, it could attract tourists as well as rural and urban people from the area. The tiny easily -reached rural farm - site, with its "Great Barn", provided the unique atmosphere needed to draw such a crowd. The theatre itself is a one hundred foot tent which seats approximately 400 people. The "Great Barn" houses all the Vorkshops, rehearsal areas, art gallery, lobbies, shops, con- cession area, restrooms and actors' dressing rooms. A feature that may not appeal to the farm resident as much as to the city dweller, is the diningroom in the Playhouse Barn, called "The Stable Fare". There, playgoers may dine in an atmosphere complete with the original barnboards, stone walls and lanterns. The play we chose to see, was "Last of the Red Hot Lovers", a comedy by Neil Simon, about a married man who suddenly wants to become a. swinger. Curtain time was announced by the ringing of a cow bell and people from all walks of life filed in to watch what proved to be a very fun -filled, well presented play. •Bob Windsor was superbly cast in the lead role as Barney the "Swinger". He portrayed a balding, overweight, middleaged man who felt life was passing him by, and he wanted desperately to break away from his staid life and feel that for once he had "lived." The following three women he encountered as a result, caused a series of changes in his outlook on life: • Marilynn Harris, who played the role of a brazen, flippant, self-confident street WoMan ; Kathleen Forget, a confused unemployed night-club singer; Joan Hanna who por- trayed his wife's best friend, a staid conservative person like Barney. It wasshe who made him finally realize what type of person he really wanted to remain — decent, lovhig and gentle. Underneath the comedy, however, true human emotions were constantly evident. What person hasn't wanted to "really live" before life passed him by? What. person hasn't felt trapped in a drab existence, only to discover, as the "Swinger" did, that his conscience wouldn't let him lead the sordid life or' become part of the "new guiltless society"? I felt, in general, that "Last of DON'T BUY CARPET! UNTIL YOU COMPARE - QUALITY, PRICE AND SELECTION AT CASHCO CARPETS n Beautiful Downtown LISTOWEL 291-4440 ST.
