The province has mailed out its
first cheques under . the
Guaranteed Annual Income
System which came into effect on
July 1, 1974. These first GAINS
payments have gone to qualifying
Ontario residents, 65 years of age
or older, who have incomes of
less than $2,600 annually.
Recipients are reminded that
these cheques are in addition to
the regular federal Old Age
Security and Guaranteed Income
Supplement (OAS -GIS) which is.
mailed at the end of each month.;
The Ontario GAINS cheque rep-
resents the difference between
$216.67 and the OAS -GIS entitle-
ment at the new July, 1974, rate,
combined with any private in-
come the recipient may have.
In this regard, it should be
noted that the federal govern-
ment announced the amount of
the OAS -GIS cheques will be,
larger, effective in July, as a
result of an increase in the cost of
living.
Qualifying blind and disabled
residents under 65 will receive
their GAINS payments in-
corporated in their Family
Benefits cheque which, as usual,
will be mailed at month end.
The eligibility of GIS recipients
for GAINS payments has been
determined from information
already on file. They do not need
to apply.
Elderly residents of Ontario
who have incomes of less than
$2,600 annually, but who do not
meet the federal 10 -year
Canadian residence require-
ments for OAS -GIS pensions,
may still qualify for GAINS en-
titlements under Ontario's less
stringent residency require-
ments. Persons in this+group may
apply for gains by returning an
application form obtained from
the Ministry of Revenue.

residency or other qualifications,
