In the heat of the evening, the
heat of the night and the heat of
the election, David Halton and
Lloyd Robertson worked
tirelessly, losing sleep and
perspiration so we could see
minute -to -minute results of the
big day across the country.
Election talk is old hat now but I
dv't suppose any of us have any
idea just how complicated was
the entire set-up that, without a
hitch, provided up -to -the -second
coverage and fed it to every
province in the country.
The coverage began at 6:30
which was 8 o'clock and poll -
closing time in Newfoundland,
and this provided a very long
night for the two anchormen, a
heck of a lot different than a
fifteen -minute newscast!
SOrnewhere about eight or nine
hours later, when the last poll in
the Yukon reported in, the boys
were allowed to go beddy-byes.
Which you probably say is no big
deal since you probably work an
eight or nine -hour shift too. But in
front of eight color cameras,
always expected to look your
best, be on your best behavior
and say the right >ing at the
right time? There's the dif-
ference!
Of course, the most import
boy in the whole evening's
proceedings (on second thought,
since it is so VERY efficient, it
must be a GIRL! !), was the
computer which put in an even
busier eight hours, working for
both the English and French
radio and television networks.
Programmed and developed to
CBC specifications laid down by
newsmen Ray Chaisson and 'Ron
Robbins of Toronto and Michel
Hebert and Gaston Dagenais of
Montreal, it was connected to -
both Ontario and Quebec hydro
grids. If one of the powers had
failed, the other would
autot'natically have switched on
"a> Carried the load with no
interruption in service.
Ana if cute little Candy Com -

company,, the boys also had Video
