When Denmark's su- pergrandmaster, Bent Lar- sen, topped the field in the Far East's first great internation- al chess tournament (Manila, 1973), it made news all over the world. But not because he wen it. It was the upstaging pres- ence. of Bobby Fischer, who came to watch and not to play, that wound up with all the publicity. (His smiling duel. with President Ferdinand E. Marcos of the Philippines — to see who could' flash the greatest amount of teeth — was a shoo-in for Marcos.) Despite the prize money, the tournament stars had a right to gripe. After being sold a bill of goods on the merit -of bringing grandeur to the Philippines, the cliessplayers found themselves back at their usual places in life's cul- tural hierarchy : the bottom of the ladder. The coincidental perform- ance by -opera stars Renata Tebaldi and Franco Corelli was so successful, an extra concert date was scheduled. 'It meant," Larsen bitterly informed- the readers of 'Chess Life,' -"that the chess tournament had to be kicked out "already eight. days be- Larsen's surprise was sur- prising. After all, the world has always hung onto the coattails of chess, so long as it was good for a laugh but made no demands for handouts. Around the turn of the cen- tury, the Archbishop of Can- terbury was invited to open a chess lournarnent, and unac- countably accepted. (Al- though he was not a good player, he confided, he did have a great deal to do with kings and queens, he did live in two castles, and was prob- ably the only living person to be both a bishop and a queen. had been checkinated And writing of recent events, Gen. The grandeur of chess f • is in the eyes not of the be- d holder, but of the player. The m Challengers' division of a re- Pe cent Hastings (England) w tournament was a triumph for German' master Ludwig. Rell- stab, the oldest winner in its Po history. Victory gave him en- Y tree to the following year's Premier tournament. There he finished dead last, but for three weeks he mingled with the gods — at age 69! „ This year's Challenger's' was wen by Mark Diesen, of Maryland — the youngest ever to win the event. "Pay great attention," exulted the man frorn the London Times. "This 16 -year-old schoolboy is destined to becoMe a real grandmaster." If it happened, it would be no. surprise. -We are all in the gutter," *rote the chess -play- ing 0Scar Wilde, "but some of us are looking at the stars."
