Sister Madeline, principal of St.
Mary's Separate School, Mount
Forest, co-ordinated the May
Crowning of Mary, Mother of
Jesus, this year at St. Mary's
Church on May 29.
The Grade 2 pupils to take part
in the Act of Consecration, en-
rollment in the Scapular and the
Crowning, file into the warm
majesty , of the church with the
words of •the hymn, "On this
Day", on their lips.
Do they knob what this crown-
ing means? "f think they do,"
Sister Madeline.

a Consecration is more of a cus-
tom within the Roman Catholic
`'Church than a. practice. The May
> Crowning is quite ancient.
Why is the crowning always
performed in May? "May is
;usually associated with devotion
;o the mother and father,", she
says.
Until this year, there has al-
ways been a large Rosary Rally
at Hamilton, where everyone
from. the Hamilton Diocese gath-
ered. A tribute to the Mother of
Christ, the event had been con-
tinued for 25 years.
The Grade 2 children, who have .
brought the flowers they carry,
listen to the living rosary by
pupils from, Grades 4 through 8.
The enrollment in the scapular
is a 'confraternity or, again, a
type of consecration where a,
person is dedicated to Mary in the
sense that he tried to imitate
what she, did and, as a result,
asks her special protection.
The scapular or medallion that
is worn, is a sign, like the wed-
ding ring is a sign oro symbol. The
scapular is a symbol that a per-
son belongs to God and is asking

The priest told the pupils that
the medallion or scapular they
had received said, through the
picture of Mary on one side and
Jesus on the other, that they be-
longed to God.
Perhaps the crowning could
best be summed up by Marty
Hieber in his introduction of it on
that night in May.
"We have come together
tonight to honor Mary, the
Mother of God and our Mother.
The honor given to Mary fulfills
her own prophecy. 'All ages to
