Let's Make a Deal 13
For the first time in ages, CBC
' made a liar of me and carried the
proceedings of the 26th annual
Emmy Award presentations live
from the Pantages Theatre in
Hollywood. And so they should,
for the television awards mean
more to most Canadians than the
Oscars, iince the general public
watches more television than
mc\vie entertainment.
Believe it or not, the telecast
looked more like a big movie star
bash, proving once again that the
*odd of television is growing and
, moving into the bigtime. It has
"` been years since great stars like
Ginger Rogers, Gene Kelly, Eva
Marie Saint, Alexis Smith, Leslie
Caron, Shelley Winters, and on
and on, have appeared on an
Oscar. telecast, but there they
were in all their glory on the
Emmy telecast, singing the
praises of television and com-
pletely and utterly overjoyed to
be a part of the proceedings.
Johnny Carson was the host of
the show and I never did thilk
Carson was_ very funny. But he
did get in a few sharpies about
the length of the show (it ran
about a half-hour overtime) and
the fact that the Emmy almost
met her Waterloo because of
some disagreement before nomi-
nations 'were announced. Actit
-ally, though it was first an-
nounced there would be only a
few Emmys presented, the end
result sayv more than ever pre-
sented to winners in different
categories.
Unlike other years, though, the
series performers and stars of
specials knew ahead of time that
they were winners. The only sur-
prise annotmcements were those
named performers of the year.
But it didn't seem to hurt their
crowd any. The audience was
packed with winners and other
stars, I might venture a guess
that more stars were there than
ever attend the Oscar telecasts.
The awards Canadians were
most interested in, were the
comedy, dramatic and variety
series awards. The comedy
awards went to Mary Tyler
Moore who even get to accept it
from her former co-star, Dick
Van Dyke; and Alan Aida of
m -A-841. That show was also
naMed the best comedy series.
Michael Learned of "The Wal -
tons" earned dramatic awards
and "Upstairs, Downstairs" was
'named the top series in that
class. William Holden who
worked so very hard for the
movie industry and never re-
ceived the recognition he de-
served, won for a limited series,
as did Mildred Natwiac; neither
series, to my knowledge, was
seen in Canada.
The Carol Burnett Show was
named best music -variety series
and Harvey Korman accepted
the best supporting comedy per-
former for his work with Carol.
Their little buddy and the only
guy who can really tear Korman
apart with his jokes, Tim Con-
way, was literally 'behind'
