Huron Middlesex PC's name
Bob McKinley as candidate
Robert McKinley of Zurich was
the unanimous choice of Huron -
Middlesex Progressive con-
servatives at their nominating
convention in Saltford last Thurs-
day evening. Mi. McKinley has
represented Huron in /he House
of Commons since the fall of 1965
and the riding has been held by
• the PC's for 34 years.'the name
of the constituency was altered to
include the word Middlesex the
day before the Liberal govern-
ment was defeated in May.
Nominated by James Donnely
of Goderich and seconded by
Glen . Webb, the candidate said
this election has been described
by the Liberals as one the people
don't want, but heclaimed that 60
to 80 percent of the respondents to
a recent survey had failed to
agree. Slanting his remarks to-
ward the farm voters, Mr.
McKinley claimed the Liberal
government has paid scant at-
tention to farm problems. He
termed the recent subsidy on beef
cattle a wasted exercise since it
returned neither higher prices to
the growers nor lower prices to
the consumers.
Guest speaker for the meeting
was Eldon Woolliams, MP for
Calgary North and an outspoken
critic of the government. He. re-
ferred frequently to the high re-
gard in which Mr. McKinley is
held by his fellow members in
Ottawa and the excellent way in
which he has carried out his task

as party Whip.
Mr. Woolliams spoke of the ap-
parent animosity between his
province and Ontario, arising
recently over the price of Alberta
oil consumed in this province. He
said that Alberta is aware that
when its oil could not find a mar-
ket a few years ago the con-
sumers in Ontario paid a higher -
than -going price to maintain. the
Alberta economy. He added that
there is no real problem between
the two provinces.
His speech ranged over the
problems of agriculture, short-
ages of consumer goods and
labor, the government's
unemployment insurance policy
and inflation. He claimed that
local improvement payments
under the Liberals' LIP program
have been unfairly distributed,
$106 million going to ridings held
by Liberals, while only $59.6 mil=
lion was spent in PC -held ridings.
He blamed the present high rate
of inflation on the unprecedented
level of government spending.
The speaker was thanked by
Mrs. Roy Bennett of Wingham.

Bill Jarvis, PC candidate in
Perth Wilmot and Charles Mac -
Naughton of Exeter, former MPP
