QUESTIONS WOMEN ASK What's meaning of brown line? By ELEANOR B. RODGERSON, M.D. Q. What is the significance of the brown line that appears town the middle of• the,. ab- domen during pregtiaricy?' A. There is no . particular significance in this brown line during pregnancy that -we know . of. It may be ac- companied by brownish spots in areas, particularly across the • nose, cheeks and fore- head, and darkeningAi of other pigmented places such as the nipples. This discoloration al- so occurs with oral contracep- tives and in certain tumors. The pituitary gland in , the brain may be affected some- how and influence the skin cells that lay down melanin, . the coloring pigment. This' discoloration is more evident in some women than in others. It depends upon the kind of skin you have been born .with. It is nothing to worry about and tends to fade out gradually when tele preg- nancy is over. Q. I have heard that the only way to remove stretch marks from pregnancy is through surgery. Is this true? If so, what does the surgery entail? A. The technical term for these stretch marks is "striae," and they may not only appear on the abdomen, but on the breasts and the thighs, etc. They usually are reddish to begin with and "FROM OUR FIVE FURNITURE SHOWROOMS IN ARTHUR WE MUST CLEAR 520,000 WORTH OF STOCK AT BARGAIN PRICES Don't Miss It! Some young girls who'. mature rapidly and gain weight`may also =notice- then ry on .moi ear "a 1 s , t -" ` .It seems the elastic fibers -in the skin are not able to stretch fast enough, but also there must be other factors, per- haps hormonal, because some women will grow large tumors and not develop stretch marks. Then, too, skins vary in different in- dividuals. The marks are usually most noticeable in young blonde girls who be- come pregnant: They simply ,are not large enough to tolerate a pregnancy . grace• - fully. Can the stretch marks be removed through surgery? If the abdominal skin has been left quite ., flabby, I suppose pieces could be removed, but there would have to be scars left where this is done. Abrad- ing the skin, sandpapering it, as has been done for some acne scarring, may be a pos- sibility, but I don't think these procedures are pratical if the idea is, just to remove the stretch marks. The abdomi- nal muscles can be repaired and extra skin removed if present. Each case would have to be considered sepa-. rately. If the plastic surgeon was not enthusiastic, it would be poor policy to insist. Q. I took oral contracep- tives for one year. Now I have been off them for one year, having regular periods, but I just am not normal anymore. I love my husband, but I don't care about having sex much. Is this an effect of the pills' A. Every time a new report of birth control pill side ef- fects appears, we worrien worry a little more. It is true that we do not know what every long-term side effect may be, if ''any, "long term" meaning more than the 20 plus years during which the oral contraceptives have been used. In your case, though, we have something to go on. You say that your men- strual periods have been nor- mal since you stopped taking the pills. This fact should mean that your pituitary and ovarian glands are secreting the hormones they did before you took the pills, I would think your present feeling might be connected with fac- tors not related to the con- traceptives. Have you had a general physical checkup? Are you carrying two jobs -•- working outside and home both? Are you tired? Are you dis- satisfied with life? I think in your case the space between :stopping the pills and now is too great for a carryover ef- fect from the pills. If your health is all right, try to find soimething to do that you are really interested in. You may be surprised 'how much en- thusiasm, this will engender. SPIRITED HONEY PEARS 4. winter pears 1 cup honey 1 cup water 1 ' cup Scotch . whisky or blended whiskey Peel r - trio A+dfie and' scoreshoney How to make a pin cushion By ALICE MORRELL Our sewing group of teen- age girls decided to use sew- ing scraps for sewing projects that would be salable at the spring bazaar, At the suggestion of one of the senior ladies in our town they decided on an old-fash- ioned pin cushion and thread holder that ladies of ,yester- year used to carry to quilting bees. The old pin cushions used to be filled with sawdust, but we've updated our model with plastic foam; otherwise they are just the same. You will use four circles of material cut in a six-inch di- ameter, a circle of plastic foam cut two and one-half inches, or half a plastic foam ball, one-half yard of tubular elastic or elastic thread and bias binding (optional). Pin two circles of material together right sides in and sew one-quarter inch, leaving a one -inch opening (Fig. 1), F1G.1 Fig 2 Fie sew and turn, catch the one - inch opening by hand. Do the other two circles the same as above. Now to finish the edge of the circle, some of the girls used a decorative stitch on their sew- ing ewing machine, others chose to add a lace edge, while others used a colorful bias binding, or you may leave the edge as is (Fig. 2). To finish the pin holder in- sert the plastic foam circle in the center of the two circles of material and hand -sew around or sew on the machine using the zipper foot. Now catch the edge at eight intervals around the circle; this makes little pocket open- ings for'the spools of thread. Insert the elastic thread through the circle and tie — this way the spools stay inside for carrying, but can be pulled out for use. Cut off unneeded thrq d and the spool will snap back in place., These are attractive, nos- talgic item§ for bazaars or as gifts for your sewing friends.
